There was an anecdote on Robert Mays podcast yesterday, where he said he spoke to Rivera about using technology on the sidelines, and Rivera told him he wouldn't use it, not because it wasn't effective, but because he felt it was unfair to the opposing coach and lacked integrity

Literally, Rivera refused to use technology because it was 'unfair'.  Big reason Denver knew all of our plays in the Superbowl was how naive Rivera was.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot of other coaches aren't really that concerned about being fair to the opponent. The Patriots sure as hell aren't.

The general read from people is that McDaniel's was given way too much power too soon when he should have been concentrating only on coaching.

Is that true? Don't know, but if he's hired here I certainly hope it is.

You would be hard pressed to type something I disagreed with more strongly when it comes to sports. I have always found this to be a rationalization of cheaters to attempt to excuse their behavior.

Having said that, I don’t disagree that if Rivera refused to use technology on the sideline that wasn’t specifically forbidden by the league, he was being naive and probably just rationalizing his own dislike of technology.

Realistically speaking, there is a certain amount of hypocrisy that comes with being a sports fan.  Your opinion of certain players and actions frequently has a lot to do with who they play for.

I suspect if this happens, we'll get the chance to see just how deep our own sports hypocrisy goes.

The truth is, professional and revenue college sports are rife with cheating. It's no surprise, because millions and billions of dollars are at stake. It is no different than insider trading or some of the financial industry misconduct that has been exposed over the past 20 years. When that much money is involved, people will take short cuts. It is human nature.

It doesn't make it right, it just makes it what it is.
