Opinions: not a guaranteed starting QB for 2020

Opinions please... Spent a 3rd rnd pick that doesn't see the field all season. Play the undrafted QB instead all season. Never get the chance to see what your draft pick can do.

I understand that the Oline is an issue. You know that Allen is not NFL material and now have no idea what the draft pick can do.

Cam may or may not be here and nor healthy (totally unknown outcome.)

Allen is not a starter and barely a backup.

Grier totally unknown.

Go into 2020 season without a guaranteed starting QB.

What now?

What do you want to accomplish by starting Grier? Just to say we are using him? Do you think he will turn our season around? Our team sucks and they want him to develop. At this point we will only hurt his development behind our line. Let him continue to grow and showcase what he has to our next head coach next offseason.

So what do they do....sign a older retread vet if Cam is not here or healthy?  They can't start Allen.

Grier was drafted to be our long term backup. We will draft someone round 1 or sign a vet if we move on from Cam. Look at the upcoming QB free agents, a lot of current starters will be available.

Not give any more snaps to a guy who is probably going to be cut!

This. I can guarantee you that the majority of the "why aren't we seeing Grier" posters here don't know anything about it. It's not about "well we're not winning with Allen, so maybe starting a different QB will give us life". It's about "OL is trash, defense is trash, and we're just not very good". Putting in a rookie on the tail end of a lost season for the sake of "seeing what you have" is ignorant as hell IF you believe that he can play. This isn't a QB-desperate scenario. This is a rebuild starting point due to a staff that is just bad from top to bottom (save for MAYBE two coaches) and some pieces on the field that simply do not work.

Grier going out there will result in us losing games, same as Allen. The staff CARES about Grier's confidence at this point though. Grier getting starts now is either resulting in him losing confidence due to playing well and still losing or playing poorly and losing. Grier is not willing us to wins, and there MAY be a few games in this losing skid where Cam could have willed us to a win. Some people here are immortalizing Cam's best days and assuming these games are guaranteed wins with Cam. For sure, odds are better, but this team has a poo ton of issues and ignoring that so you can comment on the QB situation is lazy and dumb. Even with Cam, this is not a playoff team and you're blind if you don't see that.

at this point I don't think 2 games is going to fug up his development.  he has had almost an entire season to sit and watch. IMO, we should get some idea of what he can do in a game.  UNLESS he is so bad that the offense itself would be so much worse with him, it wouldn't be worth it to evaluating other players

    • I understand why people say things like it could be worse in relation to Tepper but it just doesn't jive for me. Are the optics bad? Yes. Would I want her to be the owner of my team? No. But I mean she's only been owner for a year and the Colts overall are a better run organization. As far as I know they've also never had the distinction of having the worst win percentage in all of professional sports either. Tepper has owned this team for 8 years and about the only thing that has been consistent has been the ability to continue to find different ways to achieve new lows. Even now people are saying things are different yada yada but we said these same things at certain points under Rhule Fitterer and Reich. I'm going to wait to see how the rubber meets the road this upcoming season before I make any strong conclusions about anything in relation to the longevity under this franchise going forward.
    • This is a toughie because I wonder what a guy like Canales thinks about redemption stories for addiction issues. Also, I think this is a case of 1 player getting caught, and not being naive enough to think this isn't more common in college than we think. I'd toss a 3rd rounder out there. 2026 is essentially a redshirt season regardless, so he's not taking over for any NFL QB next year. Best case, he's ready to go in 2027 if we pass on Bryce's extension. Worst case, he's our future backup QB2. Kid has the tools to be an NFL QB. I do think we could somehow land a '26 3rd round pick back in a trade. Our past years' third rounders are: Brazzell Princely Wallace DJ Johnson Matt Corral All this to say, I could see a team like the Jets going w/ a 2nd. They have three FRPs next year.
