Marty Hurney - The Drafting Record

Recommended Posts

OP summed it up by saying how could you get Peppers wrong? His safe picks don't showcase his ability to evaluate players. Peppers, Gross, DWill, Cam and Luke were all the best available that suited a need that no one else needed. It fell in our lap. However, we wanted David Carr and had the Texans not taken him, Hurney would have. We also wanted Harrington. There's only a handful of teams that struggled to take at least one all-pro over the course of fifteen years. Yeah, Gettleman wasn't necessarily as great at first round talent outside of CMC and to be fair, everyone on DJ's nuts right now were not back in September-October. OMG STATS AND RECEPTIONS AND YARDS!!! Kyle Allen dumped off passes left and right and tell me how many times DJ beat someone deep for a TD? one or two times? People here are so hypocritical and also just look for the new thing to prove themselves right. Hurney is garbage and there's a good chance he drafts Herbert but it could be the scapegoat for Tepper to let him go. He was SO fuging SOLD ON GRIER and now look, we need another QB.

We need to take the best OL available, i don't care if it's a C/G it's better than what's on the roster. Or, whatever the safest possible pick is since that's Hurney's specialty. I'm pretty sure Hurney overpaid players b/c JR didn't want a media circus so he just nipped it in the bud. This franchise is poo and he's a major reason why. We need to tank for Trevor and cut the contracts. Next year isn't going to be fun and we play the AFC West so 2016 all over again. We need that AFC East/NFC East schedule to get in.

Eh, even as the resident Hurney apologist, I can concede he's terrible with managing contracts.

JR aside, he just gave Shaq Thompson one of the most worst extensions I've seen in years (non impact player at a non impact position, when we're already paying another non edge linebacker premium money).  I really have no words for how bad the Shaq Thompson deal was, but also understand these things aren't worth jettisoning the league's most consistent drafter of high end talent over the past 20 years.

I'm confident Tepper will create a structure in which Hurney focuses on the draft (where he's one of the best in the NFL), and avoids these mistakes by next year.

HAHAHAHAHAHA he's going to overpay Bradberry and Boston next and then we will have no cap space. Then we cut Cam, draft Herbert and turn into Cleveland drafting QB's until we get it somewhat right in six years when Hurney is still here b/c he's so great at convincing people of things.

Hindsight bias, classic

If 'safe' top 10 picks were so easy, the bust rate on them wouldn't be so high.  If Gross was so obvious, why did all the teams ahead of him not draft him (other teams had no need for an elite borderline HOF tackle who could play both sides?).  Why did Luke last until he did?

Here are guys who were drafted before Luke

-Matt Kalil (lol)

-Justin Blackmon

-Morris Claiborn

-Mark Barron

You don't think any of these teams would have loved to have the best linebacker of the generation?

Don't be silly

These picks seem obvious years later when they're Hall of Famers.  I doubt you wanted to draft Cam Newton in 2011, and if you did, you would have been one of the few on this forum who weren't worried about his 'fake smile' and still haunted by Jamarcus Russell.

Peppers was the consensus #1. The only question was were the Texans taking Carr or him. It wasn't a debate. Everyone knew if Peppers didn't go 1, he was going 2.

The Vikings screwed up trying to pull off a trade. The Panthers ran up right after Jacksonville hauled ass to the stage. He was the first OL off the board. I remember laughing my ass off because we did get Gross and I didn't think we would get him until Minnesota screwed up.

We drafted Cam following a horrible season. 2-14. And to top it all off we had traded the 33rd pick for Armanti Edwards. A guy many projected as a late round or UDFA. That is a colossal bonehead move. No one even knew what to say when the pick was made other than WTF.

Luke was a great pick following another let down season. I'll give him props here.

DWill. 4 of the next 7 RBs taken were Pro Bowlers. 2 of the 3 non pro bowlers were Lendale White and Jerious Norwood. This wasn't a matter of finding talent, he didn't fug up an easy position pick.

Hurney actually said years later that if the Panthers would have had the number one pick, they would have taken David Carr over Julius Peppers.

Sometimes circumstances save us from ourselves.

Bradberry needs to be paid tho I'm hoping it's not overpaid...10m or so is what I'm hoping maybe with some incentives. Boston I would love to have back at the right price, his locker room prescense is an added bonus but I dont know what that # is. He is a slightly above average safety that flashes even better some games. He would however be great if we fix our run stopping issues.

Hurney does love him some seriously overrated QBs. And I'm not referring to Cam.

Link?

For every great Hurney move, there's always some unsourced, random rumor someone heard on the internet, that can never be verified, that someone throws out.

I heard last week on the Huddle that Mike Shula (who was at the time, a rookie quarterbacks coach with no authority) had to talk Hurney into drafting Cam Newton against his will.

But I'm not surprised, I think you're the same guy who continues to peddle out how Beane had to talk Hurney into trading Kelvin Benjamin, as if this is how trades go down in the NFL.

And there's always the 'Hurney tried to trade a 1st for Clausen' myth, even though multiple reports actually say he was looking to trade back into the top of the 2nd round (this one never made sense, if he wanted to trade a 1st, why didn't anyone take him up on it?).

And the current meme is that Hurney would have drafted Grier over Kyler Murray (somehow everyone on the forum became autistic overnight and fail to grasp 'GM speak', where every GM spins that they had a first round grade on all their prospects, and we're supposed to take Hurney literally).

The funniest thing about Hurney defenders is that they defend his "best skills" (drafting) by saying "there are probably some other teams who do it worse!". They don't delve into the disaster that is Hurney in Free Agency because they know they will lose. He is mediocre at drafting and bottom 3 at working Free Agency. Hurney defenders are the "fug it, lets just go to Chili's, I don't care anymore" type of people.

He's not new and you probably wouldn't have the same opinion if you saw the other stuff he posted under another name.

Not particularly impressed with the stuff he's posting under this name.

There might be a weaker argument than appealing to the draft value chart to try to prove that Marty's a good GM, but I can't think of one.

Honestly, the persistence and prevalence of these viral Hurney 'myths' ('I heard from my barber with connections he was going to take Carr over Peppers', "I heard Mike Shula had to talk him into drafting Cam'), is probably the best evidence for why Hurney has been so excellent at the draft for two decades.

His draft record is so unimpeachable, the critics who have developed an emotional resentment towards him have to attack a fictitious Marty Hurney who made hypothetical trades and selections in his mind that never actually transpired.

Because it's actually hard to critique a guy who has the most consistent record of drafting high end talent in the entire NFL over the past 2 decades.  I think Ozzie Newsome actually had a better record (better, but less consistent), but he retired.   And with Newsome, you could actually point to countless 1st round busts.

So I imagine if this was the Ravens huddle instead of the Panthers huddle, and you had a mob of irrational Newsome haters, they would point to Matt Elam, Breshad Perriman, Kyle Boller, Travis Taylor,  Mark Clayton, and even Michael Oher as 1st round busts that justify why Ozzie was a terrible drafter.

I think the most ironic thing about the obsession with the decade old Armanti Edwards trade is that the Patriots used that 33rd selection we gave them to select Ras-I Dowling (a guy who had a much worse career than Edwards, who was at least useful on special teams).  Which doesn't showcase how incompetent the Patriots are, but does highlight how difficult the draft is to navigate.
