Decent read/articles on potential new head coach Josh McDaniels

Idk the articles I read all said they are extremely close and you would have to think at this point Bill takes in stride that his staff will be plucked, as he has adjusted throughout his career so many times. He has prob been expecting Josh to leave for a few years now which is why he has opened up the vault of knowledge to him, because he knows he will be a HC again soon and nothing will stop that.

All valid, though I also think Belichick expected McDaniels to stick around so he could hand him the torch.

McDaniel's seems to have expected that too, although recent indications that Belichick is going to stick around for a little while longer may have led him to the end of his patience.

I'd add that Belichick's suddenly icy relationship with Bill O'Brien might be a predictor of the future as well.

Belichick was cordial with O'Brien too, until he tried to steal Nick Caserio.

Yea good read, thanks for that. I’m definitely open to giving McDaniels a shot. I just don’t want someone that thought The Golden Calf of Bristol could be an nfl qb to have GM powers heh

Bill B traded a 2nd rounder for Kony Ealy, and has had a lot of draft fails. You can’t assume he hasn’t evolved since that time. The Golden Calf of Bristol did make an impact at least in the league for an extremely short period of time and got the Broncos a ton of extra money in Jersey sales.

As i said in another thread, sign him to a 5 year contract and at end of year two, he bolts because, you know, things are hard rebuilding and Bellinchek retires and the equally sleazy Pats owner comes calling, then what ?

He was a disaster in Denver, and yes I know there are successful coaches who fail their first go around

ask yourself, in what world would anyone draft The Golden Calf of Bristol with a first rd pick

if the Panthers sign this guy, and he turns out to truly be the self absorbed little prick we all know he is, the Panthers have only themselves to blame

he has shown what his character is, over and over again.  Believe him

Oh I’m sure it’s possible he’s evolved. But I wouldn’t want to bet my team’s drafting success on it. Bill B isn’t a good drafter either, I hope we don’t draft like the Patriots. (Or trade 2nd rounders for obvious busts)

Interesting reads on one of four targets for Head coach.

From The Athletic Joseph Person and Jourdan Rodrigue:

Happy Josh Mcdaniels GIF by New England Patriots

Josh McDaniels

Age: 43

Previous positions: Personnel assistant, New England (2001-02), defensive assistant, New England (2003), QBs coach, New England  (2004-05), offensive coordinator/QBs coach, New England (2006-08), head coach, Denver (2009-10), offensive coordinator, St. Louis (2011), offensive coordinator/QBs coach, New England (2012-present).

Appeal to Panthers: McDaniels is held in high regard in league circles, despite his about-face after accepting the Colts’ head-coaching job two years ago. Before firing Rivera, Tepper talked a lot about sustained success, and it’s hard to argue with the track record in New England. Though Bill Belichick’s coaching tree hasn’t produced as many successes as Andy Reid’s, it hasn’t stopped other NFL teams from trying to mimic the Patriots’ model by hiring the likes of Eric Mangini, Jim Schwartz, Bill O’Brien and Matt Patricia. McDaniels was only 33 when he got the Broncos’ job, and he was just 34 when he was fired after going 11-17 after nearly two seasons. Clearly, NFL decision-makers believe he’s ready for another shot: The Browns and Giants also are scheduled to interview him.

Notable: The Panthers also have a front office position available. And McDaniels has two former college teammates who work in the Patriots’ front office — Nick Caserio and Dave Ziegler — leading to speculation that one of them could join McDaniels in Charlotte if he’s hired.

What they’re saying:

Veteran personnel executive: “I think he’s gonna be the most impressive (in his interview), but he’s also gonna be the most guarded. I think that he knows if Belichick ever left that he would be probably pretty close to being in line to take that job. Not that Belichick’s leaving. But he has a bird in hand in New England. So he has a little bit of leverage to be picky and not to jump at any and all opportunities.”

(Any concern from around the league about McDaniels, after backing out of Indianapolis job in 2018?)

Veteran personnel official: “I think everybody has their own ideas and speculation. But unless you were one of the handful of people that were involved with it, there’s probably stuff you don’t know. But when something like that happens with anybody, that’s obviouslysomething you’ve got to be prepared, if you’re that person, to state what was behind it and be open about it.”

(On McDaniel’s offensive style and the Patriots’ success)

Veteran personnel executive: “The thing McDaniels does better than anybody that he doesn’t get enough credit for — yes, he has Tom Brady — but he’s willing and able and understands that he needs to play to the strengths of what they have on offense. That’s the difference between the New England style and basically every other style. The Andy Reid tree is gonna come in and, by and large, they’re gonna run their system. Whether it’s Matt Nagy, Eric Bieniemy, (Doug) Pederson, Frank Reich — Frank’s a little different because he’s got a little bit more influence from other people and other systems.

“But by and large it’s a system and the pieces fit in the system, whereas McDaniels is gonna come in and say: ‘OK, what do we have? OK, we have Christian McCaffrey. Well, he can be James White. He can be a little bit of (Julian) Edelman and we’ll fit the pieces around this and then we’ll fit the pieces around these receivers.’ And he’s gonna make it work. I think that’s the one advantage McDaniels has that I’ve always appreciated.”

General manager: “Josh is super successful. You’re probably not going to find a guy with his track record of success. And a lot of times, guys only get one shot at being a head coach. I know enough that Josh believes he learned a lot of valuable lessons with his experience in Denver. And that (Patriots) offense has been very good. I would say this: The Patriot people overall have not been that successful. But I feel like this guy would be different now that he’s been out there … Even though you learn all of these things from Bill and they worked (in New England), you still have to be yourself a little bit. That would be my hunch with him, is that this time he’s going to be himself. I know for a fact that he tried to be Belichick when he went to Denver. When you don’t have Tom Brady, and you don’t have Belichick’s success, it doesn’t really translate.”

His biggest downside is the Indy mess, but that was due to them lying about half the stuff they pitched to him (I think they lied and told him Luck was 100% and that didn't fare well.) I would be happy with this hire.

All of the pro-McDaniels speak is for some reason about his win now persona and some other out-of-thin-air contrived attributes simply because he comes from a Pats system and now has some good write ups.  There seems to be some light around his douche...but..

He has a poor track record (you either look at it or ignore it), is a known sh*thead, has made many unprofessional moves, and the unwritten rule is to never sign the Patriots leftovers.  Their offense hasn't even looked that great the past few seasons.  There's an odd fart in the wind that is drifting towards liking this guy because of our rumors and it's fun watching so many play tough internet guys to convince themselves he is now the best option.  These articles should be treated just like the McCarthy fluff.

But FYI--You made a nice thread.  My point is directed towards a concerted few who are being very loud about how McDaniels is this ruthless guy with immense intangibles.

Cheers bud.

I hope he can be a Sean P for us if hired. I know that he failed in Denver but that was 10 years ago, and since then he has stayed at the top of his game while gaining an extra 10 years of experience, and one on one training with Bill B. Bill has basically made him his apprentice/shadow and shown him how to run an organization top to bottom over the years. If he is able to build a team the right way and have the owners support (which Tepper will give 100 percent) he can be the long term Answer we need. You have to admit it’s impressive that he has called all plays and created 90-95 percent the offense game plans, which is one of the most adaptable in the league. They have won without a lot of talent other than Brady throughout the years and he plays to the strength of the personnel on the field, not blindly sticking to a specific style.
