Coaching Interviews This Week

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Matt Rhule is today.

Josh McDaniels is still Friday for the moment but that could change. Word was the Browns and Giants were both trying to move their interview dates up. No shock if we are also.

Pretty sure every team with an opening has interviewed Eric Bieniemy (except Dallas, who interviewed Marvin Lewis) so the Rooney Rule is satisfied in all cases.

Related: The Browns are interviewing Brian Daboll today. The Giants will have Rhule in tomorrow.

Panthers waiting on McDaniels until Friday as a formality?

Unknown.

When he was still in the playoffs, all his head coaching interviews were scheduled for Friday. Now, teams are scrambling to move them earlier. It's been confirmed for everyone but us.

One difference: When coaches are in the playoffs, you generally have to go to them because they're busy. If they're out, you can bring them to you.

What is the likelihood that playoff results cause us to jump the gun?  It's my understanding that we can't hire someone who's season isn't over (possibly incorrect).

Say, hire McDaniels before we get a chance to hire Bieniemy?

My understanding is you can interview but can't finalize a hire.

Will we rush? Don't know. We moved early on firing Rivera so it's possible.

If you need reason to worry about McDaniels, read this article from a decade ago:

https://www.espn.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/12461/mcdaniels-legacy-is-The Golden Calf of Bristol

Now, it could be said that McDaniels was trying to earn respect at the age of 34, showing the world that he is not to be run over.  But he shipped off Cutler after a few weeks (in article) and went after The Golden Calf of Bristol.

In fairness, he beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs with that same The Golden Calf of Bristol--but what could others see that he could not?

hurney drafted pickles a decade ago and it sure didn't stop us from keeping him around.

point being: this indictment on mcdaniels has no bearing on him now. he's been among the hottest potential coaching candidates for the past few years for a reason.

I always thought the job was Stefanski's. Tepper was known to hire Ivy League guys a Appaloosa. Stefanski played DB at Penn and I've read many commentaries speaking of his intelligence and love of the game. For the record, I think it is between Stefanski and McDaniels and it may come down to interviews. NY Giants will have the upper hand on Rhule. Bieniemy doesn't seem to be getting much traction elsewhere, so I assume he'll be the Browns' choice. I wouldn't be surprised to see McDaniels back again under the promise that he's the next coach in New England. All this is just a hunch, but I can see it play out.

I see what you are saying and hope that you are proven to be right if he comes here---but when you read about the Denver episode, it is all the evidence we have of McDaniels when given some authority.  Did the tiger change his stripes?

And I would hardly call the article "an indictment" unless that is how you read it.  If you do, then how could his past actions not cause some concern?

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
