No Marquee Free Agents Will Want to Sign Here If They Get Rid of Cam

Pretty sure this same thing was said after we cut Steve Smith.

Probably also said by 49er fans after the release of Jerry Rice, Colt fans after they let go of Peyton Manning and Cowboy fans after the departure of Emmitt Smith.

It was equally silly in all those situations.

Do you remember that Ravens regular season matchup with Smith's new team?

If you think any player on this roster is above consideration of potentially trading for assets in a scenario where we have no viable starting quarterback then maybe you aren't actually interesting in winning bub.

They'll have to win a Superbowl first. They'll have to build from the ground up. The 49ers tanked what 4 straight years and still didn't win the SB, so good luck with that

Seriously you think players around the league is going to like that move? You can't let Cam play the last year of his deal? But its a huge problem when players don't want to honor their deal, hold-out for more money, let the teams know to trade them, retire instead... it's a real problem then

Tepper, after the 3rd season of that deal you just made, you're going to lose a lot of support if they don't make it to the playoffs and at-least put up a good fight

Let that man finish his contract.

you poor thing

Are you paying attention to which thread you're in, dude?

On the topic though, funny thing: I also remember the Panthers being in the Super Bowl a year later while Steve Smith was sitting at home.

Winning, right?

I don’t think any “Marquee” free agents will sign here without a mega contract any who even if cam is here.

Ya, he might play a slight draw this year but it’s pretty obvious to the entire NFL we are in tank, draft and rebuild mode. I don’t see anyone in their prime signing here until next year at the earliest but more overly 2021 since the whole CBA situation and who knows how far that will go.

Vets maybe? I have the feeling Rhule isn’t the type to go after seasoned vets. It seems they want to go as young as possible and build from the ground up. On the flip side seasoned vets are already going to know the NFL “Process” and if they smell an ounce of bullshit coming from Rhule they won’t even think about coming here.

Side Note: what ever happened to the defensive gang that was all going to play somewhere together that Boston was raving about?

The two issues connect in terms of the overall conversation we are having regarding the direction of our franchise. Which is why I mentioned both here. In one breath you trot out the names of multiple players whose original teams moved on from them as reason why we should move on from Newton. But in another breath when someone mentions possibly shopping other players at luxury positions to acquire our next franchise quarterback if need be you get mad and throw out baffling trade comparisons that make no sense. You are not being consistent. Either you want to improve the TEAM or you don't. If you do, we need a QB, and that may require some tough decisions.

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
