Edit: Kyle Allen extended for 1 year

Edit: this was my original post

I haven't seen many people talking about whether we should keep Kyle Allen around next season. Maybe some are assuming he's under contract in 2020. Technically, he's not. He's an Exclusive Rights Free Agent. Per NFL.com, that means:

Quote

Exclusive rights free agent (ERFA): Any player with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expired contract. If his original team offers him a one-year contract and the league minimum (based on his credited seasons), the player cannot negotiate with other teams.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001021617/article/2019-nfl-free-agency-glossary-all-the-terms-you-need-to-know

If the Panthers want him back for one season, they can have him back for cheap, unless another team wants to compensate a draft pick.

So should they keep Kyle Allen around? My vote is an unequivocal YES.

Kyle Allen was an undrafted free agent who wildly overachieved. He moved the offense, and had the team competitive in most of the games he started. The hate he gets for his turnovers and mistakes can be directly attributed to his inexperience. He was essentially in his rookie season in 2019. Some people act like this was a first round draft pick making these mistakes. He has potential to have a very long career in the NFL as a Matt Moore-esque backup, and maybe more if he improves his ball protection.

And I think Will Grier should be on the chopping block. He and Kyle Allen should be in direct competition for a backup/3rd string spot in training camp. One of them should be cut, and I'm leaning Grier, his draft position be damned. He couldn't even complete a pass in his two starts. Grier and Allen actually looked like the reverse of their draft positions.

I'd put more blame on the GM for not getting a competent veteran backup over Kyle Allen, who at his experience level should have probably been a third stringer for a team trying to make a playoff run in a do-or-die season for the coaching staff.

I'd probably take him to camp and let him compete, at least.

As I recall, there's a deadline for when Restricted and Exclusive Rights players have to be tendered, and if they're not by then they become Unrestricted Free Agents. I don't remember when that is but it would be kind of relevant to the discussion.

It doesn’t hurt to keep KA around especially with the terms of his deal.  Grier has shown nothing but my thoughts when we initially drafted his was that he is a project.  That said chopping block is a bit drastic imo. Not saying he isn’t expendable but not sure I would give up on the project just yet.

definitely understand OPs position tho.

It's just a few days away I believe. That said most teams have already tendered their ERFAs. The salary is so low and there’s no other teams involved so I’d honestly say that he’s not in the plans at all. It’s either go with Cam and see if he should be extended or we’re trading Cam and Grier gives us the best opportunity to get a high pick to select a QB. I don’t think we’ll pick a QB high enough this year. Picking another Grier on day 3 isn’t going to cut it.

I know we re-signed a couple of exclusive rights guys a while back, but if we've tendered anybody, I missed it.

There's no more obvious sign of the team tanking next season than starting Will Grier for a full season. They should trade McCaffrey if that is the case.

Is it, though?

By all accounts, Rhule is pretty high on Grier. His performance against Baylor really impressed him.

He might think Brady, Peetz and Whitfield can do something with him.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
