Verge's Draft Grades

He was the enigma of this draft.  I was pretty high on him too, but what worried me was how hot and cold he ran from evaluator to evaluator.  ESPN did not have him ranked at all on their draft day board.  I saw BBs with him going 3rd round to UDFA.  The size was there, but something spooked some folks.  Not sure what it was.

Pride Junior, on the other hand, was solidly projected about where we took him.  His biggest knock is physicality.  That can be worked on.  Otherwise, all the tools are there.

Odd, idk lol

I just liked the size (speed) and versatility of Robinson II.

I think the knock is that he was strictly zone vs man.

Pride Jr seems to have man lockdown potential

Either way, this has been my favorite since 2001 and 2002 drafts. This draft has that same feel to it :shades:

One reason why YGM (and others) dropped was due to the combine being in prime time, running late into the night and having players leave before they ran the 40.  They thought they would run at their pro day but most were cancelled.  Rhule said that because he recruited him out of HS, he had those numbers and was more comfortable than others may have been.  He also said that Roy was a steal for a similar reason.  He had no 40  time but Rhule had timed him at Baylor in 4.8 which at 330 was faster than almost everyone at 300.

That MF can move, his game tape shows it! Scary for a man his size!

If you look to 2021, is it reasonable to assume that this draft and undrafted free agency produced the following key contributors/starters?:

DT:  Brown, Roy

DE: YGM

CB: Pride

LB: Orr

S: Chinn, Robinson

WR:  Bayless

TE: Jordan, Ricci

OL: Bowen (G/T), BaylorCenter (C)

BOLD:  Will contribute considerably as rookies

12 contributors/starters by 2021?

Oh lol

They actually have complete game film YT.

That get off is impressive and just watching a big dude move like he does will give you a chub. He does have short arms which will hurt to translate to the next level to a degree but if he keeps that snap take-off, he can negate the short arms some.

I think our 7th round CB has a shot to beat out Pride. That dude is super green with a lot of potential.

Pride is simply too soft and needs to work on tracking the ball and making the play. He has very low int's for a CB

Low INTs don't concern me, it's a matter of giving up big plays or not.

I'm blanking on the Safety that played for Louisville a few years back, but the guy tied the all time College Football record for INTs in a single season... then he got drafted in the 4th round peteered out of the NFL. He was incredibly exciting to watch, but he took big risks, and played almost a zoneless game at safety. When it came time to play in the NFL he got burned over and over again.

I think Pride is close to being a very good CB.  His traits are exceptional, he just needs some coaching and to improve his technique.

I expect growing pains this year (and as a result, a lot of calls from fans that he is a bust and sucks...fans seem to have little patience for development these days), but think he can become a good CB within a couple of years with quality coaching.

He has really good feet.  The odd thing that made him drop is he has only 31 inch arms.   It too many interior guys in the NFL with that little length making plays.

Hope he proves them wrong.  He can certainly move.

I am interested to see how Bowen and Teckleburg fair.  I know nothing about them.  Might have to go watch some film.

hopefully fans will be willing to give a 4th rounder a little time to hone his craft. Unless we can find a decent FA in a very limited pool, he will be starting day 1, and, I'm sure, will get beat a few times. I haven't watched him play, but he certainly has all the tools.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
