Personnel-wise, we need another CB or even 2.  If we play the rookies---yes.  If we bury them as has been done in the past, I say take our lumps and throw them out there.

Same page.

Well said and i agree. My one knock on Ron Rivera was that he was not good at developing young players by giving them playing time, instead he  stuck with seasoned vets.

I have a feeling that we still have one decent signing left in us and probably one trade. They may not happen until post June 1st, however.

Then again, I've had these feelings come up before around midnight and the wife doesn't seem to care.

Not to smart to bother your wife at midnight to express revelations about football. Ha Ha

Cockrell > Apple? El oh el. I believe you. I really do. Yes sir

You can LOL all ya want... but it's truth.

There's a reason a former top-10, 24 year old CB that has ideal 6'1" 200 lb. boundary corner measurables has been traded once already and is still a free agent into May.

Apple was signed and then failed his physical. It doesn’t help him getting signed right after the draft. Many teams have filled those needs already. Apple will be playing somewhere this season if there is one. Not sure about Cockrell. So yeah, el oh el

If we can sort out the CB1 problem, I think by the mid point to end of year we will be a 12 to 15th ranked D... Not a bad goal for ad bad as we were last year. I think our defense will be improved game one but give up face palm plays but lock down in the red zone. Imo the offense, if it gels, could be a 5 to 10 unit and could win us some games until the D turns up.

I think there will be a wave of cuts/trades to fulfill that CB1 spot for us.

Some buy low options or guys that could get cut that fit the size/athleticism mantra include:

  • Cordea Tankersley 6'1" 200  26 years old MIA player that is now in a full cornerback house & has not lived up to his draft hype
  • Ahkello Witherspoon 6'3" 195 25 years old SF player got lost in a talented, but no-name DB unit (outside of Sherman) & contract expires after '20
  • Sam Beal 6'1" 192  23 years old NYG supplemental draft pick w/ zero red flags other than injuries
  • Isaac Yiadom 6'1" 190 24 years old DEN former 3rd rounder that might not fit in the mix in DEN
  • Desmond King 5'10" 200 25 years old LAC that's more of a slot guy, so not that interested....but he is a vet to stabilize our youngsters

CHI roster looks pretty deep too, and could see a cut there maybe of a vet before the start of the year.

Obviously guys like Cockrell, Elliott or Dennard make a lot of sense too that are already hanging out awaiting a signing..... just wonder how Cockrell and Elliott are viewed by our new coaches.

Sign Cockrell, already! Pick any game at random from last year and pop in the tape. The guy was all over the place playing his ass off. Its a no brainer. I’d rather play him than Jackson who looked like he had never attempted a tackle in his life.

He is too slow for Rhule n company. Also, his tape was average at best

Cockrell is more of a zone cover guy.  Which is what Ron wanted but I don't know if that is what Rhule and Snow want.  He might not fit what they are looking for in the current defense. He might want more of a man coverage guy.

I think you're setting yourself up for a major disappointment.

Don't tempt fate with that.

Haha well I suppose if it did we might get one of those qbs everyone wants, I personally don't see us having a worse year then last but thats me. We also lost Cam and Keek in the off-season, well lost Cam in preseason...... And Greg Olsen.

If we focus more on trying to legitimize our LB core I think that will help defense more this year than going all in trying to find a Bradberry replacement. We aren’t even fully sure of how the defense will be utilized, yes some concepts will come from how they were run at Baylor but based on our draft and signings all that seems to be missing is a true MLB. Shaq might be able to fill Kuechly’s shoes to an extent but I doubt he will be our Mike.
