Onside kick replacement possibility

Recommended Posts

That's not nearly a close substitute. Onsides kicks are incredibly hard to pull off and when they miss that field position is also a factor when the team with the lead is at the 40ish or more with the penalty. 4 and 25 when the D gets 2 extra players maybe.

Whatever it is, they can't put it in the refs hands and it needs to be a lot more difficult with at least one caveat thrown in.

NFL went form taking 40 years to make ONE minor change, now they make vast changes each year.....

STOP IT, YOU FOOLS!

I'm old enough to remember the Pete Rozelle days.  When the NFL made a rule change, it always seemed well thought out, including the unintended consequences.  By in large, rule changes under his guidance were things that made you glad they did it.  Of course, they were not nearly as frequent and generally used a minimalist approach.

Now, they throw the excrement against the wall to see what sticks.  It's like every change is a beta test of a dumb idea that was not ready for prime time.  It has had the effect of me watching less and less NFL.

I once had a conversation with a manager in the facility I worked at the time.  I was one of the union reps.  He stopped me in the hall and asked me how it was that we (the union) knew what they (agency management) were going to do before the facility management found out.  He asked if we had ears on the ground in DC.  I assured him that we did, but the never talked to the facilities about that stuff unless it was dire.  No, the reason it seemed like we knew ahead of time was much simpler.  I told him we looked at every issue, thought about the possible reactions to the issue, ranked them from best to worst, then "picked the stupidest thing possible," and that is what they would do.  He bit his lower lip, raised his finger and said he would like to argue with me.....but he couldn't.  We both walked away laughing.

I think that same logic is used when the NFL assesses the issues they believe are worthy of a change.

They did change one thing that will have an effect on teams:

* They increased the number of players who can be designated for return from injured reserve to three. The limit had been two.

I think they should not put a limit on the number at all, but 3 is better than 2.

    • PFF feeds the beast.  So it’s largely popular for that IMO and is embraced by the NFL machine because it helps feed the beast.  Thats why you see the cute stats pop on the Monday Night football screen lol.  Hot takes? Fantasy football? Yeah, it’s good for the NFL machine for lots of reason.  I do think the league embraces them.  Not because they are actually good at doing what they claim. actual analytics folks are critical of PFF.  Because it’s not analytics.  It’s subjective goobly goo ratings by dudes that aren’t really qualified nor even have the info to do real grading.  you got legit NFL players who say they have literally put PFF grades by the coaches grades and they are worlds apart.  Players have laughed at them pretending they can grade certain plays without the underlining info.  NFL coaches have called out there bologna at pressers.   could it be a quick tool to find out some info that has nothing to with their subjective grades? Sure.  There is a lot of data on 32 teams for cheap. But I do not buy the narrative 32 NFL teams think their grades are worth a poo or remotely accurate or meaningful.
    • Bills D looks like ass
    • I think that win vs Dallas gave them a big boost of confidence.  Thats a team that blew us out the past 2 seasons. Even when Bryce was playing okay late last season they still beat us pretty bad.  Lets see if we slaughter the Jets or go back to playing sloppy uninspired football and go from there.
