5 Panthers who could be superstars

I agree-very positive--YGM--Burns--that would be sweet.  I also think Daley could be on this list---and Chinn and Samuel.  This roster is loaded with upside and potential.

If Jackson and Apple were to come out in the same season, we have it made.

I still say that next year's biggest needs will be MLB., LT, and C.

I agree except about the MLB. I think that having Luke and the greats that came before him have tended to dull our objectivity as fans to how much MLB has lost it's importance and significance as the league has increasingly become pass whacky vs running the ball. Not saying they are irrelevant, because the modern NFL is so competitive that you need good players at every position, but linebackers, and MLB's in particular just do not on average impact the game the way they once did.

As of this moment, I tend to be of the view that almost no matter what, we will have at least 3 needs more pressing than MLB next year. Almost certainly 2 or more on the o line, perhaps secondary, perhaps even D line. I just don't see everything else working out perfectly enough that next offseason MLB moves into a top need for our roster imo.

Looking at the top defenses last year I doubt many could name any of  their linebackers.

Agreed 100%.

This team has operated like a 90's version of NFL teams for a long time.  RB and LB heavy, those two positions just don't lead to consistency and wins.

We need to focus on QB, LT (OL really), DE, CB, and DT.  I LOVED Luke, but that doesn't mean we need to replace him.

We will have needs at LT, RT (depending on Moton), C, and G.  Need two starting corners, and another starting caliber DT, will need a QB, and likely another WR.

I would address all of those positions before worrying about LB in any capacity.

When does our middle linebacker ever leave the field? It sure didn't under Luke. Maybe our current one may rotate out but that hardly means he is less important simply that he needs upgrading. I disagree that middle linebackers are not as important unless you are talking 2 down middle linebackers. But Like was always a 3 down linebacker and integral to our pass defense. I just think we are looking  for middle linebackers who are versatile and can defend the run and the pass.  And we are looking for guys like Chinn who can play multiple positions like safety or linebacker. So while traditional primary run defender middle linebackers may be in the decline, it is not the position that is disappearing but the players who are one dimensional and can't stay on the field for 3 downs due to personal limitations.

If we extend Moton and Daley looks good at guard, I will feel a lot better going into next offseason. Offensive line and secondary are definitely our two biggest question marks. It will be interesting to see if any young players step up or develop this year in those two groups. My hope is Pride and Daley are two that look like starters by the end of the year. My long shot wish is that Little some how develops into our starting LT this year.

    • I mean, if Moore really wants out, then it would behoove the Bears to make it happen sooner than later. X is a lot younger and cheaper, and may be a better fit for Johnson's musings than a disgruntled, unnecessary, overpaid vet. If they can dump his salary and maybe get a fourth or so in return, it may be worth it to them. As for development, I'm not concerned. You're talking about a seeming bust, a day three guy and a UDFA. They are developing relative to their ceilings. I doubt any of them will ever command the coverage, money, or the respect that Moore has acquired. He's a tier above them. Yes, even X.
    • IMO, if Ceedee plays against us, the game probably goes the other way. Same with Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins. Our team just isn't designed to beat teams with two high level receivers like that. But when you look at the league, how many teams really have two guys of that caliber?  There's nothing wrong with defensive adjustments, but sometimes I think a lot of fans want Evero to call a different play like a game on madden, and defensive football just isn't like that. That said, I thought we did a much better job this season against the Cowboys of flipping Jaycee and at least making them work for it, opposed to last season when they literally just lined CeeDee up on the other side of the field every single snap.  For us to just straight up switch to consistent man coverage, or a different zone, or whatever, we likely would consistently need different personnel on the field. Doing it a few times a game is a gamble and can work, but if we consistently run man coverage against the Cowboys, eventually a RB is going to beat a linebacker, or something of that nature with our personnel. Part of the reason Evero likes this scheme is that, while we have our defaults and presets, what we do is very multiple, and you can do a lot of different things pre and post snap. We are a challenging defense to read. But as you said, if guys are getting beat, it doesn't really matter what you call.
