Is it true you should only eat oysters when there is a “R” in the month?

Yes.  September- April.

BUT, I usually don’t buy them till the first freeze ( or cold weather ) .
The state monitors the bacteria and closes beds when needed .
Oysters have become the new Filet mignon .. prices over the last 10 yrs have skyrocketed. They’ve become a social outing.
Last year I paid $75 a bushel for singles,, we use to play $20 a bushel growing up

Yup, it's brutal.  Similar to chicken wings...back in the day that was the "cheap meat" now it's prized.

Also, that R month thing...beware out there folks, I ain't eating oysters in Sept. and Oct....like you I usually dig in after it gets really good and cold, and the water has dropped well into the 60's.  We were swimming this weekend at WB on the boat...nope, not cool enough for thefuzz.
