The saints also didn’t run him into the ground for two seasons.

Sorry, I thought your argument was that you should never sign running backs to a big second contract.  If your argument is that you shouldn't run your star players into the ground, that's pretty uncontroversial and I agree.

You can evaluate a signing and evaluate a player's usage independently.  The CMC signing was a good one (imo), but the way we have been using him is not.  Just like extending Cam was the right call even though we used him as a battering ram and ostensibly shortened his career.

The Saints' usage of Kamara is a pretty good model of what we could and should be doing, especially with a top tier backup like Mike Davis.

What about Gurley?  What about David Johnson?  What about Zeke?  What about Drake?  I could go on but you get the point.  1 player over 8 games doesnt make a trend.

History shows you should not. Like I said there are exceptions. Alvin split reps in the beginning of his career. I doubt the saints would’ve signed him long term if Brees wasn’t at the end and going all in. Saints have been shuffling through rbs for years.

Signing and usage should not be independent, especially if you have ran that rb at an extreme rate. And then signed him a year before you even had to. Makes no sense. You can’t really compare Cam to rbs. His issues were freak things that damaged his shoulder. Not running the ball.
