Jeff Ireland rumored to be a GM candidate

I don’t know if he’s gotten better since Miami, but if he’s the one making decisions on the Saints recents drafts, do want. They’ve been killing it in the draft lately outside the Davenport trade up and choice.

Ian Rapoport made mention of him having rearranged the Saints college scouting department.

That sounds like the kind of thing Tepper is looking for.

On January 20, 2015, Adam Schefter tweeted "................ Former Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland is being hired to do college scouting for the Saints, per source.". He was hired to be the Saints' assistant general manager & college scouting director.[14] During Ireland's tenure, the Saints' roster improved, and Ireland was allowed to build his own scouting department in 2016.[15][16] In 2017, Saints' head coach Sean Payton praised Ireland, stating that Ireland "has done an outstanding job" in overhauling the draft process for the Saints.[17]

Earlier this week at the start of the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine, New Orleans Saints assistant general manager Jeff Ireland reiterated his desire to once again be a GM in the NFL but said he is not in a rush to do so and is fully committed to helping the organization win another Super Bowl.

Ireland already has experience doing so, sitting in the top chair with the Miami Dolphins from 2008-13, but that run ended with his ouster after one playoff and winning season on South Beach during that time.

Ireland said there were a host of things he would do differently now than when he was with the Dolphins.

"I know when I focus on one thing or a couple things, that's what I'm really good at," he said. "If I ever get the opportunity to be that again, I'm going to do a better job of delegating other things to other people where I can (keep) my focus on a couple different things that I know I'm good at."

One of the things Ireland has been really good at during his three years in New Orleans has been his scouting of collegiate draft prospects. This week at the Combine, he accepted an award on behalf of the team for having the best draft, which included bringing in the future Associated Press Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year in Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore, respectively.

On Friday's edition of "Dunc & Holder," Jeff Duncan and Larry Holder touched on how Ireland might not have to venture far out to find his next GM opportunity.

"When he was hired, there was always that possibility of maybe at some point in the next few years, if a team comes calling for Jeff Ireland to be a GM that maybe Mickey Loomis get elevated into a team president type of role and would fight to keep him," Holder said.

Duncan said that being out of the spotlight has helped Ireland to focus strictly on college scouting, and being the yin to Loomis' yang, in that Loomis has more of a business background while Ireland works directly with player evaluation.

That aspect, along with being able to find players to fit the scheme for head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, makes him the perfect candidate to assume the role should it come along.

"That would be a great boon for the Saints because what he's done speaks for itself," Duncan said. "Jeff Ireland seems to be a perfect scout as far as marrying personnel to the scheme."

I think Tepper needs to go in a new direction with all of this change. He wants a guy that is data driven and analytical. You need new blood with new ideas, you have a first time NFL heach coach with potential, might as well go with a candidate waiting their turn for a first time GM position. Old retreads is not necessarily the way if you want new philosophy. The NFL is changing rapidly with new styles and philosophies. For example just look at the trend of QBs coming out of college, more athletic, improvising plays, not statues at the QB position. Need a GM who can recognize the change that the NFL is going through.

That's one I hadn't heard.

We owe the Chiefs big time for that one.

Its true, more than few reports. I said we need to thank the football gods, cause after Brees...then 20 years of Mahomes...... That could have been a Pats like run, cause they have talents EVERYWHERE except at QB..... Even recent Sean said it was the best QB workout hed seen and anothers coaches had to see it....Andy Reid did.

Good find.

Taking a job as a draft consultant has been a common thing for former GMs and personnel people over the last several years. It's the NFL's equivalent of taking a temp job and hoping to latch on with the company.

Ireland did more than latch on. He's gone from being a consultant to pretty much running the operation.

I've heard talk of the Saints giving him the GM job. Worth noting that at some point in the next few years, the Saints will have to reckon with Drew Brees and finding his successor.

If I'm choosing between that situation and what you have in Carolina, I know which one I'm taking.

Tepper needs to ask him if his mother is a prostitute in the interview. Fug this guy.

People grow and I bet if you heard all the questions asked by scouts/GMs/coaches, youd never hire anyone. I dont know about 2020 days, but gay questions where the norm for a few players during the process. No girl friend?!?! "O he gheeeey " -scouts huddled in rooms. Many times you have a question to ask if a players is on his script. It can be lewd, personal, or weird. Many players grew up without fathers too, the psychological part of drafting players is more important than football part now-a-days. Not agreeing with the question, he wanted a reaction..... and didnt think it would get out cause until that point players didnt reveal whom asked the questions. Dez is talking fool, he could not shut up to save his life.
