Game of Thrones... Is it worth it?

"Hold the Door!"

Okay, that was the first moment I've laughed out loud at the show, and not in a good way. Halfway through season 6 and I'm already starting to see the degradation of the writing. Major character kill-offs aren't even shocking anymore. But the "Hold the Door" thing was just so embarrassingly contrived. I can just see the writers room and some 23-year-old film school hack going:

"And then Hodor helps them escape the cave as the White Walkers close in."

"How?"

"Maybe he closes off the cave entry?"

"How? It's a cave. What could he close off?"

"Maybe there's a door."

"...a door?"

"Yeah."

"...to the cave? The cave has a door?"

"Yeah."

"But we've seen the other cave entrance like 10 times already. And there's no door."

"But there is on this side."

"Why?"

"Because, get this. He HOLDS the DOOR!"

"..."

"Get it?"

"Get what?"

"He HOLDS the DOOR!"

"I don't get it."

"HO' DOOR. HODOR!"

"Oh...Okay. I thought his name was just 'Hodor.'"

"Yeah, but this is clever!"

I was screaming with laughter, and I didn't even have to look to know that this wasn't something from the books. But indeed it isn't. His name is just Hodor.

starts off really strong and is probably a 10/10 up until season 5. that's when you will start seeing some outrageously stupid poo happen but it's still a fun, enjoyable experience. the later seasons are more like summer blockbuster movies though - turn your brain off and try to enjoy the pretty stuff. horrific ending.

overall the most disappointing show of all time.

I actually thought Hodor and that storyline was great.     GOT was still peak GOT then.

I liked the story line as well. Just the contrivance of his name being a derivation of "Hold the Door" was laughable. It would have worked equally well if he like knocked down a buttress (because he's a giant and really strong) and the cave collapsed, sealing the dead in and allowing them to escape.

    • That's certainly what we hope but c'mon... stating it as fact when he's never played a down of NFL football?
    • What?!?!?! Chark's 1,000 yard season was 4 years before he played for us and he only had 525 yards in 15 games as our #1 WR.  Dude has 3,100 yards in 7 seasons, he's the literal definition of a JAG and you think he is better than half our current WR room? T-Mac is literally already better than Chark was at his peak, which again, was years before he ever even put on a Panthers uniform, and there is a real argument to be made that XL and Coker were both better as rookies than Chark was for us in his one season here.
    • Im glad we're starting low. It's nonsensical to put us at 28 IMHO based on objective things IMHO (I think 21-24) is far more appropriate but whatever. Washington was at the bottom last year FWIW.  In 2003, Sports Illustrated said our best chance to win the division was to transfer to the ACC. In 2015, everyone wrote us off as a team that snuck into the playoffs with a losing record in 2014 and lost our best WR in TC (Kelvin Benjamin). All these videos are fodder for conversation, but this prediction has no more validity than saying the Panthers are making the SB bc we're starting the season against the Jaguars again. If Bryce plays like he did down the stretch we will end up the season just fine. This roster is much better than it has been the last 2 seasons. No one knows who any season will ultimately end up, but this team is finally being built in the right way, and the idea that this roster can't compete this year is as insane as being it was when we were gaslit in 2023 that we were a rookie QB from winning the division with that roster.
