I’d like to see the Saints say screw it and try and play while over the cap. What are they gonna do? Cancel their games? Make them forfeit?

They could get fined up to $5m for each violation, the league itself could choose to cancel contracts, and they could lose draft picks.  And Saints wouldn't be able to anything about it.

Not sure about when it has to happen though.  Maybe 7 days after the start of the new league year?

I would rather pocket most of that money and roll it over a year from now when the team has fewer holes to fill and can specifically target a position or two of need in FA.  We have so many holes now, we could use every bit of that cap space during FA and still not have every position shored up.

I think it's just part of the life cycle of a team. You build it with the main pieces, then try to keep patching to it with draft picks and FA signings and extensions to make it last. Before last season we'd been throwing everything we had at the team to keep the Cam & Luke era going. It ended and now we rinse and repeat. It's why the Saints are in such dire straits. You can even draft well and still find yourself in this position. The Rams are doing it now too. Very rarely are you successfully maintaining a great cap number and competing for Super Bowls year in year out. The Seahawks hit the same wall with the legion of boom and they chose to let them go. The Pats failures in the draft finally caught up with them and not having a transcendent QB like Brady finally showed the cost.

We don't have to look at this positively or negatively, it's just where we are in the life cycle and now we start anew with hopefully a stud QB, some good offensive pieces, and a budding defense.

If we can get our QB this offseason, the real key is just finding O-linemen either via draft or FA. I think we have the core of the defense in place with Burns, Chinn, and Brown. Let them grow while adding some complementary pieces. For offense we just retain DJ and Robby, have CMC or Mike Davis, and grab a TE somewhere or a third WR. We're not in a bad spot.

      Sometimes you get very valuable information from fantasy football sites. I found an analysis that you may want to read from The Fantasy Footballers. Perhaps you'll gain an insight as to why we moved up and got him. As always, here are a few snippets: "As expected, he dominated in the 2023 season. He averaged an impressive 2.03 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play, which ranks in the 86th percentile among all junior seasons since 2013." "Naturally, after initially playing behind two NFL-caliber running backs, Brooks’ career numbers do not jump off the page. However, his 2023 campaign gave us a glimpse of just how massive his upside could be at the next level. In fact, Brooks is one of only TWO running backs in this class to exceed 2.00 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play within their first three seasons in college."  "If you watch Jonathon Brooks’ film, you will find multiple plays in which he created yardage with his quick feet and lateral agility. He is elusive in open spaces and has an impressive ability to stack multiple cuts to avoid contact. Combined with his impressive burst and acceleration, Brooks can be a matchup nightmare in the second and third levels of the defense." "While Brooks is not the most physical running back, he does have a knack for absorbing contact and bouncing off defenders. You see this time and time again in his film." "He showcased a willingness to initiate contact with the pass rusher, the strength to maintain blocks, and the quickness to adjust to the defender’s moves. In addition, per PFF, Brooks was a top-three running back in the 2024 class in pass-blocking grade last season. He's not JAG. Someone had to make the move and take him, and we were the ones to do it. He's elusive, has good speed and acceleration, exceptional contact balance, and is an outstanding blocker. Just like any nice RB transitioning to the league, he will need to get used to taking what the defense gives him, while also showing discriminating patience, but he has demonstrated some ability on that front in college. Brooks' only real knock is the ACL. But ACLs aren't career ending anymore, or even skill ending as evidenced by Dalvin Cook, Todd Gurley and others. We'll just need to temper our expectations during his rookie campaign while he gets back to form. Once he does, we'll finally have the talented three-down back that has eluded us since Stew retired.

Took the Rams trade but stayed put at 52 and at the top of the 3rd.
