Restructure contacts to free up more cap. Bridgewater, Shaq, etc.

Absolutely not. Restructuring those deals would make it near impossible to move on from them after the season.

Best option is including the two of them in the Watson trade (if it happens.) Second best option is to release them outright in 2022 and add another 30ish million to our already 100mil+ Cap.

Absolutely yes

It would depend on how much base was curious inverted to bonus/guarantee, but Carolina seemingly has little ncentive since it would commit to a third year and/or beyond unless the strategy is to kick cap hit down the road. The contract itself is already only 3 years though so the team doesn't have much wiggle room. The contract itself was a gamble and the team, quite predictably, lost, so now they have to pay for it.

Again, what incentive would Teddy have to restructure?

Rebuilds done right don't happen quickly.  We are currently on course for an EXTREMELY fast rebuild.  2021 is the last year where our cap is in a bad place.  Let's not screw that up by pushing the pain into 2022.

We were able to compete in 2020 with no offseason, a new staff and a weak roster.  The roster WILL get better this year.  Maybe not as fast as we'd like, but it WILL improve.  Our staff will have an actual offseason to get things right.  The staff will now have actual NFL experience.

We aren't talking playoffs here, but with the right signings, draft picks and a healthy CMC we could win 7 games next year.  Maybe 8 at a push.  To me, that would be outstanding progress.

It’s pretty amazing that the defense alone wasn’t ranked 32nd for losing Kuechly and Bradberry, changing HC and DC, drafting 7 new defensive players, having no training camp or preseason, and going up against Brady, Ryan, and Brees 6 times. I’m impressed at where we are in the rebuild. And you’re absolutely right. Just take whatever lumps we need to take this year, heck we still have a quite solid cap number considering like half the league is in the red. Come back next year with less dead cap and poorly contracted players off books.

Again, it would depend on how much the team offered to bonus/guarantee. Incentive would be more money sooner, as it pretty much always is in these situations. Not complicated.

And why would we want to be further committed to a player that we are likely to jettison this offseason?

Remember, we would be pushing dead cap into years where we need to be signing contracts for our core players. That's the classic Hurney move of pushing the cap problems down the road.

We wouldn't. I was just answering the question.

    • Sure, but if that happens, the draft pick will look even worse for the Falcons, as instead of getting them a player that could win now, they took someone who ran off their prize FA QB after 3 years and now looks like they may be a bust. Penix was one of the more polished QB's in the draft and would have probably been a rookie starter if taken by someone with an uncertain starting QB, if he's not ready to step in and play well in year 3, then it's probably not going to work out. So the only way it helps their contract situation, is if it doesn't work out as they plan, but if it does, they're going to cut Cousins after 2 years and then have to give Penix a monster deal the following offseason.
