Fitt is Making Saint Style Moves

So apparently, NFL.com has Carolina as a best fit for FA TY Hilton. I just wanted to know what popular opinion will be on this lol

I wouldn't be mad about it, but I highly doubt this would happen. Just seems like a luxury add for us. Especially when the whole fanbase is wondering who will be our CB2 (Or who could poss. push Donte to CB2)

Fitterer did this to make Haason’s cap hit as low as possible.
According to Overthecap Reddick will only count a ridiculously low $1.92 million cap hit this year

This is why we’ve been on high salary guys like Rudolph and William Jackson.

Both players we signed yesterday (Miller and Luvu) have cap hits that probably total $2 milllion

Clearly we still have enough cap to pursue  a player like Steven Nelson or Kawann Short

Dave that's not true, we only have him for 1 year on this contract no matter what. Those other 4 years will automatically void, they are built in solely to spread out the cap hit (not a big fan of that aspect of it but we'll see how it plays out).

Here’s what I’m wondering (probably a stupid question but I just genuinely don’t know) but what happens if he plays well for us and we reach an extension agreement before the February void date?

I think it just shows we are willing and able to spend a good bit more in free agency if the opportunity arises. It gives increased flexibility in a tough year and worst case you can roll forward the cap hit you don't use this year.

It especially makes sense in the case of Reddick and Paradis. There's no downside to voidable years when you're already working with a fully-guaranteed 1-year deal, or a restructure of the final year in the case of Paradis. You know you're taking that full hit regardless, might as well open up flexibility for the current year and defer some hit to the next season when the hit will be smaller based on % of total cap.

Would imagine our plan was/is to get Deshaun or a big name (and contract) QB.  Deshaun was Plan A, and I'm sure if possible Dak or Russell Wilson would've been Tepper's next targets.  It sure sounds like Deshaun to Carolina was all but happening, and then the news broke and put everything on halt.

All of the Watson stuff also broke in the midst of FA, where I'm also assuming we had some contracts lined up already or planned out.  We didn't change our plan, and are still leaving ourselves the flexibility to trade for Deshaun, RW, or whoever in the process at the cost of sprinkling some dead cap over the next few years as the cap recovers.  Would hope this doesn't become the norm on big contracts like the Saints did with Brees for instance, but on smaller contracts, shouldn't cause any issue.

Deshaun's cap hit for this season would only have been $10.4m after a trade, which moving Teddy alone would have more than covered. I don't see any reason to think any of this is/was tied to a specific player acquisition.

It's just the reality of having a down cap this year where flexibility is more important than ever. Having the ability to react when other teams inevitably can't afford certain players is a very valuable asset.

That could definitely happen and it's not a bad question. The new contract would just be added on top of the money we're already paying him for this contract. The $5M signing bonus is spread out over this year and the void years. Here are the cap hits for each year for this deal:

(disclaimer; these are tiny bit off, don't feel like dealing with the decimals)

2021: roughly $2M (around $1M base salary and $1M from the signing bonus)

2022: roughly $1M from signing bonus PLUS up to $2M if he hits the sacks and/or pro bowl incentives

2023-2025: roughly $1M from signing bonus EACH year.

For discussion sake, let's say we signed him to an extension that was worth $40M over 4 years, with a $20M signing bonus and $5M base salaries each year and keep it simple at that with no roster or other bonuses -- each year's cap hit in this hypothetical deal is $10M. The total cap hits would be:

2022: $10M PLUS 1-3M depending on incentives from this contract

2023-2025: $10M PLUS $1M from this contract's signing bonus which is spread over the void years

Perfect explanation. Thanks for that!
