Looking at it under this lens, I'm not sure pocket time is a very good measurement for an OLine.  Looking at that list, there is a mix of great and crap OLines in that top 10.  While our pocket time numbers look good, I'm not sure it's really telling us anything.

What doesn't look good is hurries, pressures and hits.  Basically, what the stats seem to be saying - to me at least - is that Sam is doing a good job of understanding his line isn't as strong as it should be.  He knows, and he's getting rid of the ball quickly.

We're also seeing a pretty high blitz rate, which certainly impacts pocket time, pressures, hurries, etc.  I think that makes sense.  You have a questionable OLine and a QB who until recently was known to make poor decisions under duress.  Sam just needs to keep making good decisions and beating the blitz.

I think a better set of stats to look at for OLine is rushing.  For example:

That is sorted by Yards before Contact, per attempt.  We are second from bottom.  When you flip that sort the other direction, you see something that looks a lot more like what you'd expect.

Imagine what CMC would look like if he were 3 yards downfield before he was touched.

Don't let a single stat fool you into thinking our OLine is "ok" / "average".

Our PASS PRO IS about average and was much better than average until the Houston game where we had 3 out of 6 of our sacks 5 out of 11 our hits.  

In Houston our pocket time went up from an average of 2.3 to an average of 2.4.  Sam was a little more hesitant than usual.  They were in zone most of the game, so our wrs weren't finding the seam well or Sam was taking a bit longer when they did.  When it goes back down to 2.3, we will see fewer hits, sacks and hurries like before.

For those of you who cheered when Elflein went down, that says a lot more about you than about Elflein.  We did WORSE when he was out.  Linemen do not work in a vacuum.  

So far Sam is getting hit about average for the league.  He is not getting killed or running for his life.  

Our stats are better than Saints and the Falcons.  

The saints have more sacks and hits for less than half the passing yards.

You had a seven page thread a week ago discussing how "bad" the oline looked in Houston. Maybe we should just see how they look against Dallas? And word of advice. You really need to let the Elflein thing go. If he can't see the field nothing either of us says will matter bc we can only utilize his services if he can stay healthy 🤷‍♂️

      I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.

      Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.

      I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
