Why have a punter that can't do poo else?

So is it normal to not have a backup kicker in the NFL? Seriously wtf. Matt Rhule is completely unacceptable as a Head Coach and Tepper needs to fire him tomorrow ASAP. This has gone on long enough already.

Someone asked this earlier, and no, NFL teams don't keep a backup kicker (or punter, or long snapper) on the regular roster.

Some have an extra kicker on their practice squad. We don't.

Thanks man. That doesn't happen often so I was confused a bit lol. But still. To not have any sort of backup at all seems ridiculous.

For the record, it's been reported that Edwards was the first person they went to.

Edwards stated that he "didn't feel comfortable" doing kickoffs.

That's why they then had to turn around and go searching for somebody who did.

Too me, that's about mental toughness.  Dude was scared he would mess up.   Guarantee he has practiced kickoffs WAY more than Zylstra ever has.

That's not the type of weak minded poo I want on my NFL team, even from the punter.  Get rid of him.

I understand that kickoffs and field goals are two separate arts but freak accidents like today are the reason you need a guy that is proficient in more than just punting.

Why not have a printer that can't do anything else? We have offensive lineman who can't even block and a head coach who can't even coach. Seems rationale to start hiring punters that can't even punt or a kicker that can't kick right? I'm surprised with how bad our coaches are that we even have a punter that can even punt a football.

It’s just so strange that the dude doesn’t atleast practice it every once in awhile on the off chance that the kicker gets hurt. Like dude your still a kicker and a WR is more comfortable at kicking than you. Cut him now please

What they practice isn't up to the players.

It's up to the coaches.

Do other teams have punters that double as wide receivers and we just haven't heard of it? 🤔

Most specialists only specialize in one thing. Punters can kick and kickers can punt in a pinch, but neither is generally all that great.

To be fair though, we don't really have any idea whether our punter can kick or not because our head coach chose to let somebody else do it.

And remember, this is the same coach who thinks John Miller is our best starting Right Guard.

Maybe we can pay Todd Sauerbrun back that work out bonus to do kicks. 🤷‍♂️

    • Has the league just decided they don't care about calling this a penalty anymore? It's crazy how many times every week players are moving towards the LOS while in motion when the ball is snapped, sometimes it's pretty egregious too.  This really shouldn't even be a hard one to call, it's so obvious when a player is running in motion while drifting towards the LOS, and sometimes it's not even a drift as much as clearly running on an angle towards the LOS and not parallel to it.
    • I beg to differ. I would take our young core of offensive players over the 49ers. Panthers: Receivers Tmac, Legette, Coker, Horn Jr. 49ers: Receivers  Pearsall, Jennings, Borne, Robinson The 49ers have the edge at Qb due to experience, but if Young ever puts it together he may have more upside. Mccaffrey and Dowdle are a push this season, Mccaffrey is still great out of the backfield catching the ball, but he's been inefficient running this season, the 49ers are dead last in the NFL in rushing yards a game and near the bottom in yards per attempt.  Their defense without Warner and Bosa, it's not even close to actual playmakers, they don't have a Derek Brown on the D-line or a JC Horn, Trevon Moehrig in the secondary.
    • Same. And Slavin. I really miss Slavin, and this game shows the team does as well.
