What matters: a QB’s talent or their situation?

A smart coach would do that. But building a great oline takes time.

A solid team would be drafting oline in every draft to keep the oline deep and prevent having to shell out large contracts to aging vets.

A smart team would be taking a qb in every draft that is deep in qbs even with an established qb. Again, to hedge yourself against injuries or contract stalemates.

A smart team would not throw second contracts at non-productive players that are a dime a dozen.

I could go on and on about what could have and should have been done to change things. But I'm losing interest in helping Rhule figure this poo out.

Well, we have drafted OL in most of our recent drafts. Many of them just sucked.

Kurt Warner told a similar story. He was actually in the Packers training camp once as an undrafted free agent. He got cut, and even if he had made the team he would've never started because Brett Favre was entrenched as the QB in Green Bay. He ended up in Europe and the Arena League before getting another shot in the NFL.

Warner won two MVP awards, played in 3 SB's (winning one, and losing the other 2 by less than 7 total points), and ended up in the Hall of Fame. He said had he somehow remained in GB behind Favre none of the above would have had a chance of happening. In fact Warner was never suppose to lead "The Greatest Show on Turf". He only got a chance when starter Trent Green went down with an injury early in the 1999 season.

Warner was able to have fate smile on him. It makes you wonder how many other people could have had success in the NFL but were never given an opportunity shine because of a lack of opportunity (bad team, no playing time, injury, team politics, etc)

A ton of guys. I always think about Bradberry. Dude went to a no name college and was drafted far ahead of where he should have.

Anyone else like him would have been drafted in the 5-6th round and bounced out of the league in a few years.

Instead, he gets handed a starting job on day one on a good defense with intense 1:1 coaching from Wilks.

He sucked at first but all that playing time added up and he eventually becomes the #1 corner for a minute with a huge contract.

Maybe next coach will come in with a solid legit plan on how to build a good team.

I'm hoping Tepper hires Colbert as a consultant to come in to assess the situation and tell him what to do. It starts at the top. Short of that I doubt it matters much what the plan is.

Just going by all the scenarios,  it has me changing my mind to giving Baker a shot. I say so because  it'd be a 1 year prove it not only for him but for Rhule. If it works out with the improvements  we have, then cool. If things go south, we are no longer tied to Baker, Darnold or Rhule. I don't like the idea of getting a rookie and then Rhule gets fired and the new regime is ready to pick HIS GUY.

The lastest Buzz--and I have not read the entire thread---is that Baker could be going to Tampa Bay....I saw this proposed ion the NFL Network--a station I have been watching 5 hours per day because I have no life.

@MHS831 Yeah i read that and Ian also stated he thinks us over Seattle if Baker money goes down. Knowing our luck he would go to Tampa and when Brady retires, he goes back to 2020 Baker. People forget he went toe to toe with Mahomes and even helped beat Pittsburgh in the post season.  Not criwning him but the scenario fits us better because  Rhule doesnt desebe to set us back with a rookie. image.thumb.png.586b594f7204e0c0f6b0d3c6a5d46c49.pngimage.thumb.png.86f08b16a00c0a3ad09097c39efc0212.png#

Yesterday, one of the media pundits was highly in favor of this move. He said Baker has the talent to play in the NFL. But, he felt Baker was lacking maturity and wasn't mentally ready to lead a team. He reasoned who better to learn from than Tom Brady.

Tom won't play forever. It might not be a bad idea to have his replacement in house. Plus, if Tom does get hurt and miss games, Baker isn't a bad guy to call off of the bench. I'm sure Kyle Trask would be ticked off, but it really isn't a bad strategy if you have the cap space and if Baker could swallow his pride.

Tom Brady would punch Baker in the face if he goes there. Please let this happen.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
