Baker Mayfield is a Carolina Panther

This thread has told me some of you live in fantasy land.. You seriously convinced yourselves that a 3rd round rookie in a bad QB draft should be a starter. DAY 1!!!

Were you not listening to the analysts??

Everybody after Pickett "while being more physically talented" were developmental projects.. Which is exactly why they Dropped...

If you wanted a rookie QB who could possibly start day 1... You should have been on the Pickett train and cool with not getting Ikem...

Corral needs to sit.. This is a low risk move to get a competent starter on the field.. You owe that to the other 52 men on the roster and coaching staff to give them a chance to win...

Plain and simple..

It saves Corral from getting killed year one and give him time to get ready.

If you truly believe Corral is the future of the franchise, this was the right move.

I guess starting right away is what ruined Mayfield and Darnold because they're both cheeks.

Both of them were 1st round picks and not seen as developmental projects...

Something some of you have forgotten..

Corral didn't play in a pro style offense..

Corral didn't get drafted in the 1st..

Corral has a bigger transition to make mentally then most drafted QB..

Corral never took snaps from under Center..

Corral, Malik needed to sit by every analysts to succeed..

Exactly!!! You convinced yourself that the Russell Wilson situation is a normal occurrence...

When

Reality Check!!

It isn't and not even Seattle planned for it to happen.. That's why they paid Matt Flynn 3 years 19 mil to compete with Tarvis Jackson..

its not a bad deal but it doesnt do poo for the long term, what exactly does it accomplish for one year?

Listen to the podcast they break it down from all sides, pro/con long term short term

So I listened to the podcast.   Not sure how it helps your case. Just a few takeaways.

As a deal standing by itself and if you ignore the history of our QB situation, they thought this was great deal for the Panthers.

They believe this could move us up, reasonably to the 16th-ish best offense.

They really liked our D saying it was legit and was 8th overall in defensive epa

With those rankings, they said we could possibly be a 10 win team and then they list how bad the NFC teams are and we could sneak in for the playoffs.

They go on to complain how we keep taking swings at different bargain basement QBs.  Then they admit, that they, themselves, would have blown the 2018 draft and would have taken Baker over Josh Allen (with his 50% completion percentage in college).

They called Baker the millennial Jake Delhomme.

The case against Baker Mayfield

But 1½ good seasons out of four does not a franchise quarterback make. There were too many potential game-winning drives in the fourth quarter botched, too many uncatchable passes, too few victories with so much talent around him.

Tell me he'll have a better squad around him.....no, not really

Coach?! Lol

Seriously some of you need to research the situation of 3rd round QB success stories before posting..

Because in reality none of those teams went into the season planning to start that Qb..

Dak - Romo got hurt..

Russell- beat everybody out in TC and pre season.. Which Matt still has a opportunity to do..

Davis mills - Watson likes massages to much and Tyrod got hurt..

This is not something you planned to do ppl.. If it happens okay.. But you can't planned to do it.. And you couldn't in good conciousness go into TC with no Competition for Darnold.. You pretty much told the roster we're tanking...

He was given the opportunity and he succeeded.

The FO here is too busy stacking the deck against Corral to notice anything.

YOU trust this FO? OK. Guess what the most likely outcome is...

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
