DJ makes a great point.  Baker didn't give up 3.5 million to sit on the bench and be a backup with zero chance to invigorate his career.  I think at the very least he is starting QB going into camp and he'd have to really suck to lose to Darnold.

As far as Brooks concern about training camp.  If Mayfield expects to be the starter going into Camp he better get his ass into the playbook and be ready for camp.

They probably promised that he'd get a fair shot, that is all, and that probably appealed to Baker's sense of competition like Bucky said, or his arrogance. He was also ready to move on from the Mistake By The Lake at all costs, and 3.5 mil was a relatively small amount to sacrifice for one whose probably a top level backup at worst.

Competition is relative.  I suspect Baker has a strong confidence going into campl

Didnt Jonathon Jones (?) already confirm this?

Channel that inner walk on... every QB on the roster should be digging down to find that guy. If one of them isn't willing to fight for the job, then that guy isn't going to fight to win on the field with this team.

We need a QB with spark. Hopefully one of them will find it.

I hope Baker plays lights out. I hope Sam finds what he was missing a thrives. Heck, I hope PJ Walker finds Green Lantern's ring and somehow becomes a decent NFL QB.

But in all honesty, there's still a chance with any of those guys that by mid-season we may be starting Matt Corrall. Those guys are all second (or third) chancers in an unforgiving league where the opponents are actively teeing off on your faults and blind spots, where old injuries are targeted, where your coaches are on the hot seat.

Tough, tough situation. Whoever finds their inner Delhomme can win in this situation with this particular team.

    • It’ll be extremely hard to bring an elite coach into this dumpster fire, not to mention having to deal with the Teppers.  So yeah, fix the QB problem and then deal with coaching if need be.
    • Somebody get the Jim Mora gif ready in 3….2…1…. For those of you who care, the path to the playoffs is really clear cut and Sundays game against the Rams nor Tampas games against the cupcakes they have remaining factor in really at all.    In all likelihood the only way the Panthers are playing in the second week of January is if they win the division.  The loss to the niners did a lot of damage to any wildcard hopes they may have.   The formula to win the division is pretty simple. After the bye week, if Carolina wins their final four games (at NO, vs Tampa, vs Seattle, and at Tampa) they are NFC South Champs. In that scenario, they finish 10-7 and the Bucs best possible finish would be 10-7 as well. The Panthers would win a tiebreaker with a 5-1 division record.    Ironically, the late season bye comes at a perfect time. Get healthy and try and win four in a row.    With Canales outsmarting himself at every turn and Bryce putting up QB numbers not seen since leather helmets were worn, the thought of winning four in a row seems almost impossible, but, we at least go into December in the hunt.
    • They are definitely out there condemning Canales and absolving Young.  Which, condemn Canales if you want but then leave Young responsibility free? Nah, that is just Bryce fanning.
