At 9, you just miss the playoffs and get a mid-round draft. Worst case scenario. Franchise purgatory.

Have you not been around the huddle for those meaningless wins late season vs third stringers since the ones are resting for the playoffs?

You're getting worked up for something that hasn't happened yet.

That's not really the point. Point is we got ourselves into a situation where we don't have the flexibility to franchise tag Baker if he does play well. If he balls out and Seattle or Giants/Texans etc offer him more. We would realistically need to clear about $70M in cap space somehow to franchise him. If he plays well and wants to be here long term it's doable, but if he wants to test the waters we could be out of luck in a bidding war

Franchise tag option is pretty much not possible. However, If Baker starts strong and the franchise feels they can make an informed decision they could attempt to extend him during the season and give him a small base salary for 23. He would have to be willing to discuss an extension which is unknown but if they feel confident they could at least attempt it.

Otherwise you pretty much sit back and collect a comp pick. Unless you sign him as a free agent with that same low base salary for 2023 idea.

Yup. If Baker plays well the ball is in his court, if he decides to go elsewhere it won't be a good look for the coaching staff

I think most will assume he listened to his agent and took the most money offered. Unless he talks about wanting out which isn't realistic, just wouldn't be a smart move.

$70M????? wtf?

If Baker has a pro bowl level season, we will absolutely sign him long term. Undoubtedly. Those of you with cap concerns, get over it. The cap is a myth. This has been shown over and over again. Don't worry about cap space people.

Well just give Baker a 5 year 200 million dollar deal now and cut him if he doesn't pan out... If the cap isn't real and all.

If he plays well and signs long term his cap hit next year can be $5-10M. If we want to franchise tag him it's $30M. We're coming into 23 at least $10M over the cap. Point is if Baker doesn't want to sign here long term we're going to have to do a bunch of cuts and dumb extensions to clear enough space to claim him for an additional year. I knew a cap is a myth person would eventually surface

I'm exaggerating obviously. You can't be a complete idiot with the cap. The entire team can't be paid 50M a year. This team can easily afford $35M/year for a QB though without cutting anyone of significance from this team.

Not in 2023 it can’t

Yes it can. Unless you consider Robbie Anderson someone of significance.

It doesn't matter though. Be amazed by the cap next off season. Again. Just like the past 2 or 3 off seasons when "omg we can't sign anybody and we have to cut the whole team, oh mer gerd!"

I just don't get how many off seasons have to go by where we sign or resign key players, acquire FA's and don't have to burn the roster to the ground for people to understand, at the very least, that managing the cap is more complex than it appears on paper, and to stop assuming there is no money. How many times do the 'we have no cap space' people have to be wrong before they decide to shut up and stop being wrong?

Idk and also idgaf. I said what I said and y'all can cry and clutch your pearls over cap space if thats how you get off. Can lead a blind horse to water and all that.
