Matt Rhule vs NFL coaches

So after seeing a discussion of what NFL quarterbacks Matt Rhule has defeated, I wondered what his record of victories against NFL coaches looked like.

Here's the raw info...

2020

Week 3 - Los Angeles Chargers : Anthony Lynn
• Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert's second start as a Charger; Lynn was fired at the end of the season; he finished just over 500 in his Chargers tenure

Week 4 - Arizona Cardinals : Kliff Kingsbury
• Kingsbury and Murray's second year together and the first of Kingsbury's two losses to Matt Rhule as a pro coach

Week 5 - Atlanta Falcons : Dan Quinn
• This game would be Quinn's last as he (along with GM Thomas Dimitroff) was fired following the loss which dropped the team to 0-5; interim coach Raheem Morris led the Falcons to victory over the Panthers just three weeks later in Bank of America Stadium

Week 11 - Detroit Lions : Matt Patricia
• The first of backup PJ Walker's two wins as a Panthers starter; Lions quarterback Matt Stafford played through an injury this game; Patricia and GM Robert Quinn were both fired before the season ended

Week 16 - Washington Football Team : Ron Rivera
• This was the game where Rivera stubbornly played the now late Dwayne Haskins despite a disciplinary issue during the week...and Haskins looking awful;
Rivera would come back to defeat his old team the following season with former Panther Taylor Heinecke at quarterback, largely by dismantling cornerback Donte Jackson

2021

Week 1 - New York Jets : Robert Saleh
• Saleh's first game as a rookie head coach; also Zach Wilson's first as a rookie quarterback; Sam Darnold's Panthers debut, and a victory over his former team

Week 2 - New Orleans Saints : Sean Payton (sort of)
• The game where seven members of the Saints coaching staff was sidelined with COVID; Payton and the Saints would come back to beat us in the season ender which would also turn out to be Payton's final regular season game (for the moment)

Week 3 - Houston Texans : David Culley
• Culley was fired after this, his only season as a head coach; this game was arguably Sam Darnold's best moment as a panther

Week 8 - Atlanta Falcons: Arthur Smith
• Smith and new GM Terry Fontenot's first season; they later came back and beat us in week 14

Week 10 - Arizona Cardinals : Kliff Kingsbury
• Cam Newton's comeback game; the second of backup PJ Walker's two wins as a starter; Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was replaced by backup Colt McCoy due to injury

2022

Week 3 - New Orleans Saints : Dennis Allen
• Allen is one of the few head coaches who has a worse career winning percentage than Matt Rhule

Analysis:

- A good portion of Rhule's victories have come against coaches that were just coming out of the gate (rookies) or on their way out the door (fired)

- Kliff Kingsbury is the only coach Matt Rhule has beaten more than once; nearly every other coach has either come back and beaten him later or been fired

- Robert Saleh and Dennis Allen are the lone exceptions; Saleh and Rhule haven't faced each other again and of course Allen only faced him yesterday

- In a similar vein, while there aren't a huge number of examples, no coach that has defeated Rhule has suffered a loss to him in a rematch

And lastly, it's probably worth remembering that some coaches who actually defeated Rhule still wound up fired at the end of their seasons.

Allen does not look like he will be lasting long in NO.

That is such a bad list. I don't even know how they gave Kingsbury an extension when it looked like they wanted to fire him lol.

Allen took some massive shots yesterday but I dont know if you watched Balt but holy poo Jackson is instigating hits now like cam used to and that poo isnt going to last at all

Yep they actually might even be a better example considering everyone had pretty much written off Tua

What mcdaniels is doing is fuging incredible.

Dan Campbell's got the Lions trending up.

Kevin O'Connell's doing pretty well with the Vikings too.

I think he meant Dennis Allen. Sounds like you're talking about Josh.

    • I mean, poster also said Young or Mahomes, it would have made no difference.  If there was way to actually test that hypothetical, I would sell every belonging I have and wager that Mahomes would indeed yield different results.  Mahomes automatically changes the D coverages.  He automatically changes the threats.  He attacks and threatens a field different vastly different.   We have seen good QBs and great QBs play behind horrific OLs in a single season....and they don't default into being the worst team in the NFL.  Frank Reich was old, stubborn and not creative enough to deal with an anomaly QB like Bryce.  The best QB in the NFL wouldn't be handicapping Frank, they would be enhancing Frank.  Starting week 1, Frank didn't even trust Bryce with basics....Frank gave him I what I feel comfortable with you being able to do offense.  Which took throws and plays off the table because Bryce couldn't do early on what a bad vet in Dalton could.  Mahomes would not yield the same results.
    • All I have to say to this really, is it sounds nice and downgrades Stroud to make Young look better is more like what this take does. Look at the WR numbers the year before and then the year with Stroud. He made them better, not the other way around. That’s my opinion. I appreciate you designating that it was yours. Many state these things as facts.
    • but what if.....and here me out....the pro Bryce Young stuff was coming from people under Fitterer.  You know, the people who are employed to feed him that input.  And they happen to all still be employed here.  when Rhule was fired I desperately wanted Fitterer fired.  It set things up for Fitterer to be the sacrificial lamb the next time things went poorly....every time we move on from a disaster, we are retaining a heavy % of the folks who helped bring the disaster we are "moving on from".  Everyone argued Fitterer probably could be great and it was all Rhule.  We are just repeating the same stuff to a degree IMO.   Panthers needed a clean slate post Rhule era.  Needed another post Frank era.  Things were just too bad or too dysfunctional IMO to be salvaging so much.   We keep failing to do that.
