Carolina Panthers Film Room: Who's to Blame for 3rd Down Issues?

I definitely think a combination of issues have led to the lackluster offensive performance so far. Baker's footwork hasn't seemed great and there's been multiple times he's bailed early from clean pockets. McAdoo's route combinations and playcalling are also leaving something to be desired. There's so much 11 and 12 personnel and little to no pre-snap motion to give Baker easier reads.

Ultimately though, I feel like the playcalling isn't playing to Baker's strengths - Stefanksi is a better OC/playcaller than McAdoo and he schemed up easy throws to take advantage of Baker's skills. McAdoo seems more determined to call plays he likes rather than plays tailored to take advantage of both the QB and playmakers like CMC and Moore.

In the modern NFL, you aren't going to last long unless you tailor your schemes to the strengths of your personnel. We are very bad at that on offense so far in 2022.

Honestly it sounds like everyone needs to take the next step. O-line lets pressure in too quickly on 3rd. Baker misses opportunities. WR aren't getting open, being in the right spot. Plays aren't the greatest. Someone in the building needs to have serious talks with the O coaching staff.

Well all these things are hallmarks of.....being bad.

yes...all this factors into a coaching/leadership problem. coach the players up and put them in better situations. take control of the situation. adapt who you have to what you need.

McAdoo’s offense is regularly referred ti as QB friendly.  Eli is one to have used those specific words

His record says he's 27-37 as a head coach and a coordinator. Doesn't sound very QB friendly.

For sure it starts from the top when you can clearly see its more then a lack of execution. Someone on this offense has to show some fire too. Like...come on guys, someone has to WANT it. Coaches can only motivate so much too. I wonder if anyone in that offensive room even has better ideas? I took a look through that staff and while there is experience it all looks like they are tied to Rhule or MacAdoo, but that doesn't necessarily mean they see things the same way.

Apparently there's something wrong with Robbie's game but Newton doesn't know how to copy and paste links

I read the article earlier.  It's basically a new way of grading receivers specifically and based on last years rankings Anderson was the worst receiver in the nfl last season.  Including right ends.  DJ Moore also wasnt in the top 10 of any of their categories I noticed.

After last season, I could completely believe Robby graded out worse than some DE's. That was one of the worst season's we have seen at the Panthers in a while. That's saying something considering some of our WR busts.

    • One thing to remember is the armchair quarterback rule. It is fun to speculate, but, keep in mind. We did not have this knowledge back then. I think this depends upon how you bench young.  Does he get benched but continue to learn and develop under a veteran quarterback or does he get benched with the decision to cut him next season? My thought on any new quarterback is to have him play behind a veteran quarterback for the first season.  If you play the rookie quarterback immediately, it would be like throwing the non-swimmer into the swimming pool to see if he/she will sink or swim. in this case, I actually think it was a blessing to play young through the whole season. Here is why:  I am personally concerned about young’s physical ability.  Size,  etc.  If the physical ability is a problem, it’s best to find out now rather than during the second season. Having young play through this entire first season also allowed young to become experienced. Obviously he is not a bad quarterback yet, but he is no longer a rookie quarterback and he now has experience.   I think the real question here is how long do you play young this season before you drop him altogether? By the way, I have a different opinion regarding Tepper throwing water on a fan.  How do we know if the fan was possibly cheering an injury?  What I heard was a fan was cheering an injury to a Panther player.  I am not saying that what Tepper did is acceptable but I am saying it was understandable.  It is human nature, the person who retaliates always gets noticed and suffers the consequences.
    • Won’t be able to make it this fall but was in Munich last fall. Beautiful area and the weather will be perfect.     enjoy!
    • Well, we all need to use our brains too...not just our eyes.  Our eyes tell us that Bryce was objectively bad last year.  Our brains are what allow us the critical thinking to deduce why Bryce was bad, which is the crux of the disagreement.  Perhaps Bryce just doesn't have the tools to be a starting QB in this league and this season will confirm that for us.  But you seem to not even be able to fathom or acknowledge the possibility that Bryce's poor play (i.e. bad footwork, bad downfield accuracy, bad decision-making, etc.) could in large part be a product of abysmal circumstances including poor coaching, poor playcalling, poor pass protection, and a poor receiving corps.  You call them "excuses", which they are, but how can you not understand that those can very well be inextricably linked?  It's like getting punched in the stomach repeatedly during karaoke night and then people complaining that your singing was off pitch.  Are you actually a good singer?  I don't know, that performance really sucked but I'm willing to give you one more song under better conditions.
