Traditional and advanced stats all say this is a different Darnold, but he's still unable to lead the team to a win when it's all on his shoulders

I am as big of a Darnold critic as they come but if you limit him and leave him in situations where he is more likely to  succeed this is the result.

McAdoo is a wild idiot but he does deserve credit for working better with Darnold than probably any OC in his career.

Now, all that said.......Darnold has no future with a successful Carolina Panthers franchise.

I’m ready for new coach to make the decision. It could be Darnold but most likely a rookie gotta love those rookie QB contracts

Maybe. We really aren't gonna have any idea until we know the HC and OC.

This might be one of the most interesting offseasons in franchise history.

He has had one good game, and lost in that one.   We can do better.

ONE?

uhh... *looks at stats*

I don't think so.

Are you sure you're not looking at LAST YEARS Stats?

He'll make a very good backup somewhere but he played solid for all but ONE game (the Steelers...and even in that game, he still took care of the football)

Just give him a five year contract and let him compete because he's such a nice guy and he tries so hard. This is a family affair.

Do any of ya'll that don't keep Sam Darnold's codpiece on your nightstand remember just four years ago when turning the ball over and losing football games was a deal breaker for this fanbase?

I imagine it still is.

Last season was a pure dumpster fire in that regard.

But that said, you have to admit that aside from the Bucs game (where 2 turnovers weren't exactly his fault), he's been pretty mindful of not turning the ball over.

Does that mean I want him to Start?   Not really.

I still want Corral to get a shot.

But I wouldn't dismiss him as a Backup too quickly, either.

Sam has proven to easily be the best QB we’ve had since 2017 and I’d definitely keep him as a backup on backup money, even let him run the ship for 4-6 weeks if the rookie we get isn’t quite ready to start the season. But there should be NO allusions to him being a legit candidate for full time starter. He’s not anything more than a Delhomme-esque game manager and most likely will never be more. We need more.

I wonder when that will happen....

Darnold wishes he was Delhomme-esque.

He hasn't had a game winning drive since December 2019.

I think if Sam had Smitty, Moose and Double Trouble it might be a different story. I loved Jake but he was no star, he was a game manager same as Sam.

    • Really? You don't see why a team can't draft a QB in the 1st round while then starting their former #1 overall pick over them while on the last year of their deal? It puts the team in a TERRIBLE place no matter how the season goes.  If Bryce sucks, you have to answer questions as to why he was still on the team to begin with, let alone starting over the rookie.  If he's good, then you run into the situation the Vikings were in last offseason with sticking with the rookie contract or the the guy who just performed instead of said young QB. It's one thing when teams keep a vet around as a bridge QB, it's something entirely different when that QB is still only in their mid 20's and was taken #1 overall by that team.   That just doesn't happen and not sure it ever has in NFL history before.
    • What is the alternative? - BY, will not play for less then his perceived contract (just like Cam Newton did). So you pay him top of market as befitting a 1st round, Heisman winning, playing birthing QB would get. Or you cut him. - Then we are forced to either sign a stop gap QB / previously failed QB and try to fix him or you spend a 1st round pick and draft a guy, basically resetting the team.  The reality is that we all want a top 5 QB. The problem is there are only 5 of those guys in the world and drafting, even #1 overall doesn't guarantee that.  The other problem is the NFL market. Young QB get paid. Even an average, young QB gets top of market deals. I know a lot of people here think we could sign him to an 'average QB contract' but thats not reality. Didnt happen with Cam wont happen with BY.  So we could let this season flush out and he is again a middling QB. But then we cut and restart or accept it is what it is (including compensation) and build a team around what we have.  My money is on the latter.
