WRs

Let’s talk them in here.

with Fitty’s comments about this being a sexy type draft even specifically mentioning a vertical pass catcher.  I have a Strong suspicion we are going to take one early.  Not rd 1 early but I’m pretty confident day 2 we will take 1.  And probably more so on the earlier end.

We are in definite need of anther explosive pass catcher.  If the New Orleans game was enough proof.   Our WRs have been just good enough in some games but outside of DJ Moore not a threat.

Terrace Marshall has started to show some flashes.  But you can’t bank on him just yet at being that stud WR2.

Fortunately for us.  This is a pretty good deep class at Playmaking WRs.

I’ll omit Quentin Johnston, Jaxson Smith, and Jordan Addison as they will be long gone by our 2nd pick.

First Guy I’m going to bring up (everyone feel free to bring in other names as well) is Rashee Rice.  I’ve mocked him as of late.  He has a late 1st rd grade by many.

6’2-6’3 and at-least over 206.  He is expected to run in the late 4.3’s to lower 4.4’s.  He will be at the Senior Bowl here in a few weeks.  He plays in a more special spread oriented offense so he’ll have a little learning curb in the NFL. Which isn’t uncommon with modern day College players.  Josh Downs is another one.

He is a Alpha who is very aggressive going after the ball.  Draftnetwork currently has his comp as Chris Godwin.

Another guy I really like and have mocked if I didn’t grab Rice is Zay Flowers.  If you want explosive vertical threat.  He’s probably the best in the country.  On the smaller end 5’10-5’11. 170-185.

but is an absolute playmaker.

draftnetwork currently has his comp as Tyler Lockett

I wouldn't eliminate those top WRs simply because we don't know how the board will fall, but they will also be well covered in the run up to the draft.

Couple of names I'll add is UT's Jaylin Hyatt (possible day 1), Washington's Rome Odzune (possible day 2) and Princeton's Andrei Iosivas (possible day 3) as the Robby Anderson's "stretch the defense" type role which kind of went missing. Yes Moore can do it (he did in 2020) but he is also far more beneficial to move around.

We're also going to probably want to upgrade that slot type/ get open quickly over the middle type role Shi Smith is in. A TE or 2 is almost certainly going to be found to help here (as well as help up the seams) Josh Downs comes to mind first. Very good WR prospect all around to be honest that probably could go first round as the off season goes on.

WR is definitely one of our top needs. DJ is a stud who is completely underappreciated by much of this fanbase but he's the only proven NFL WR we have on the roster.

And that has been evident a lot this season.

if a team shut down DJ.  They shut down our passing attack.  Our WRs struggled to get open or separation.  And not even a threat.

in this era of football, you need at-least 2 good WRs.  Look what the difference it has made in Philly to add another big Key WR this offseason in AJ Brown to pair with Devonte Smith.

Talking about Slot there is a guy who may be around rd4-5 who I’d love

another Maryland prospect who his scouting report and every reminds me a lot of Diggs when he came out.

Diggs

Love that the first two posts are Rashee Rice and Zay.  Two of my favorite receivers in this draft.

Rome Odunze is one I really like.  One of the reasons Penix had such a monster year.  He's a dude I've just got a really good feeling about.  He gets open and burns.  6'3 200, only 20 years old.

I like Jarrett but I don't know if he's Diggs.  Diggs was so underrated coming into the NFL because of some off-field concerns but he was dynamic and a top 10 prospect coming out of high school.  But Jarrett would be a great day 3 grab for the slot assuming his route running improves.  Shi probably has him beat in that department coming out.

Another one I'm starting to look into for the slot is Nathaniel Dell from Houston who just seems to know how to get seperation.  He's light though so how he weighs in this offseason will be important.

Smith-Njigba is my dude. Olave was my favorite WR last year and I think Jaxon is better than Olave.

Let me be very clear. I would sell the farm to get a QB whether it be via trade or draft I don’t care. So the thought of using pick 9 on anything other than a QB hurts to talk about.

But if for whatever reason we end up on the clock at 9 without a QB to pick from, Smith-Njigba is my WR1

I like the idea of Odunze the most actually. I don't think we need a burner so much as a solid move the sticks route runner. I like the big bodied kid from Iowa State mid draft. Xavier Hutchinson. He had 107 receptions for almost 1200 yards this year on a bad Iowa State offense.

So we would utilize Moore, Marshall, Hutch and Smith. Need a tight end too. Not sure have the draft goes but they're are a couple good ones i like this year like Musgrave or Mayer, who will probably go earlier than we will look at one.

I am not a fan of drafting WR in first round unless you see they will be the next Calvin Johnson!

    • I'm not sure 19 is too high for Rodriguez anymore.  He looks to be moving up boards, but it could be smokescreens.
    • I see XL this way---great athlete.  Good person.  When we drafted him, we knew he was raw.  One year of WR in college (starting) and in HS, he was a QB, I believe. We knew we would need patience with him.  I think year 3 will be make or break.  He is older, and I think that people with his athletic ability have always been better than those with less---but those with less can become more successful.  Why is that?  in my view, it is mental. XL can learn the mechanics and nuances of playing WR if he becomes focused on it and works at it.  I had the opportunity to talk to Armanti Edwards one day after OTAs (great guy) and he discussed how overwhelming it was.  He seemed shocked.  At that time, I knew that Fox hated the pick (I heard him mock Armanti to another coach when he saw Edwards drop a punt from a jugs machine--then I saw Armanti look back at Fox as if to suggest that he was feeling the pressure to please the coach. We forget that these are kids in their early 20s.  At the time, Fox was a lame duck.  Remember when he had Clausen as the #3 QB and was forced to move him up the ladder?  I liked Fox, but I think the climate and culture was influenced by the politics.  Currently, I see another Wr from SC who is struggling, but he is ina  very nurturing, positive culture. Let's see what happens with XL.  I am frustrated too---but XL was a second round talent who was raw and we traded up to get him.  He had 500 yards as a rookie--lets call 2025 a sophomore slump and see if we can't get at least 50 yards per game out of him.  If not, cut bait.
    • Sadiq feels like a lazy comp.  Sure he would be a big improvement over what we have but at a position we don't and maybe can't (midget qb) utilize.  I hope the staff puts together a list of players you automatically take at 19 (Freeling, Lemon, Downs, Faulk) and if none are there, trade back to look at (Thieneman, McNeil-Warren, Proctor, Lomu, Allen, Iheanachor, Banks, Woods).  I get the people that think an OT would be a waste because we temporarily patched that hole, and ILB and safety are a waste because that is high to take those particular positions, but by trading back we get extra picks to fill every need.  A draft that has an OT, S, ILB, slot WR, and C would really put us in a good position moving forward if we get an extra first three rounds additional pick.
