How to use Luvu and Chinn

How the Panthers plan to use Luvu is of interest to me, and I am hoping that some Huddler not addicted to someone else's prescription drugs can help.  At WSU, Luvu played both LB and Edge.  Since then, he has excelled here in Charlotte, but he has not been given 3-4 duties yet. 

Here is the depth at Each position, ILB and Edge OLB:

ILB:  Smith, Thompson (Chinn at times?)

EDGE: Burns, Barno, Haynes (Gross-Matos?)

`Note:  Fitterer said that Chinn will play a lot at the big nickel.  Gross-Matos may become a situational inside rusher (DE).

The Draft:  Seems to be weak at ILB, loaded with Edge rushers.

Questions

• Who will start at ILB opposite Thompson?
• Where will Chinn play when not in the big nickel?

Here is my dilemma:  I sorta want Luvu at an ILB, but is that wasting his versatility and skill set?  Is he good enough to play opposite Burns as strictly a pass rusher (with coverage skills?)  Will Chinn play ILB when not playing big nickel? 

I am so confused about this--and the answer to all these questions might simply be, "Yes."  These are hybrids who can play multiple positions, but that does not help me prepare for the draft--which is more needed:  ILB or Edge? 

What are your opinions.  Help me off the ledge.

There are multiple good ILBs available in first 3 rds... maybe 4 rds.

I’d say in the base 3-4, Luvu can play the edge and Chinn the SS or LB next to Shaq.

In the nickel packages Luvu can slide back to ILB next to Shaq with Chinn playing nickel, giving Haynes, Barno or a rookie a chance to rush the passer.

Makes sense.  So in terms of needs, are you saying Edge over LB in the draft?

No answer but……Are we done in Free Agency to leave that out of equation?

not sure there is a draftabke LB at 39+ that is plug and play

Luvu had an epic year  I would advocate inside so offenses don’t just run to other side

That is my point.  I am guessing that we may not be done in free agency, but we need to keep $ for rookies and maybe they do something with Burns that may take early cap.   I think we need a LB.

If we are going to play YGM on the edge (I do not see it) or if Barno steps up in year 2, we could be fine at OLB/edge.  I do not see how we are fine at LB without Luvu.  I am not sure how often they will use Chinn there--lotta moving parts and ifs.

That’d be my preference. I think we know Luvu is a great blitzer and can get pressure in a bunch of different ways. It’d be risky going into the season fully committing to him as an edge rusher

For the base looks, I think Chinn may honestly be fine at S. He’s a unique guy but don’t thing we need to run him away entirely from S especially when we have Cover 1 deployed, he’s pretty ideal for the robber assignments coming ip to the box from deep.  Thing is you want to Disguise that and playing him perceived back could be a tell.

The short being, there may be times we just should play him deep to keep offenses guessing. He’ll be that big nickel a good majority of the time otherwise.

Luvu can rotate in and outside, think they even mentioned that. That’s where I think AA from NW comes in as a perfect fit (would be @39) for the other true EDGE that can rush and run defend.

Just looking at other threads here (I am no expert) we had $29m in cap before Chark. Take out his $5m and $15m cushion for rookies/ injuries we have $9 “open to buy”.  Bobby Wagner in this defense would be deadly , imho

Despite Fitt saying that, Chinn might not fit what the coaches want on defense. They may look to trade him but his value probably isn't what it should be since he was misused the last couple of seasons.
