Year 8 Myles Garrett sure. He was not way better than Burns when he signed that deal. Plus inflation and best believe $25m is the floor.

Garrett’s only played 6 seasons. He was drafted 2 years before Burns. At this same time Garrett had 42.5 sacks in 51 games to Burns 38 sacks in 64 games. Burns has played almost a season more games in his first four years. Garrett was also named to the All-pro team twice and he took another step in year 5 and 6. Hopefully Burns takes the next step as well but he is a tier below Garrett even just in the first four years. Inflation will put him in the same tier contract wise.

Garrett was extended before his 4th season but youe point stands. Meant year 7, my bad.

On a per game basis Garett's stats are notably better than Burns over the first same number of years.

Sacks, Tackles, Tackles for Loss, QB Hits

Agreed, the only argument  Burns camp can make is that Burns has been playing out of position his entire career and made it work. He should really thrive in the TJ Watt role due to the complete  3-4 switch.

To clarify I meant over the first 3 years which was after which Garrett got a new contract

But do you reset the market based on hope that he will perform at a higher level in a new position? That feels like a very Hurneyeque thing to do.

The Panthers put themselves in this position turning down 2 1sts and a 2nd. Not that they should or shouldn't have taken that trade, but that's a lot of value.

Burns is going to get paid no doubt. I just hope we don't ridiculously overpay for a player that has yet to show he can consistently stop the run or set the edge.

    • Kalkbrenner and Sion James received regular contracts and not two ways, so the Hornets have some work to do to cut the roster size down.
    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
