Charles Godfrey

I think Martin is better in coverage. Godfrey seems to have gotten up to par with his tackling the past 3 weeks but I still don't see why Martin has been brushed to the side for Godfrey. Martin's instincts and coverage is too good and both our starting S show a real weakness in that department for him to riding the pine all game.

I would like to see this rotation fox said he was going to do..That cant go over well in the locker room when you outplay a guy and fox still gives the orginal guy his job back.

well, the rotation part was bs and Fox had no intention of doing that.....kinda like when he claimed twice earlier in the year he would evaluate in practice to see he would start at QB (yet he declared Jake both times the starter before the 1st practice of the week). :(

i agree martin has lit a fire under charles but, martin was outstanding in his 3 games starting and still has more pics than charles in his 2 season career. this is the one place on earth a rookie can perform so well and still be riding the pine. put him in a dime back or something he should be rewarded.

Looking at Martin's 3 games starting and Godfrey's last 3 games, I'm not sure you can still say that Martin is the better player. Godfrey has played on a whole new level since he came back from his injury, and that's great for us. There's nothing wrong with having three good safeties that push each other to get better. If Harris or Godfrey goes down, we won't miss a beat with Martin in.

I agree Godfrey has been playing like a man on a mission since he returned from his injury... he knows Martin is waiting in the wings to take his job should he falter.

This is the power of competition... every position on the field should be subject to this kind of open competition, guys should feel like they are playing to keep their job every game. This is where Fox's tendency towards personal loyalty backfires.

I do still give the edge to Martin in ballhawking and coverage in general, but I've gotta say Godfrey has improved drastically since coming back. I was gonna make a thread about this after that hit last night...

Something along the lines of, "How do you get a guy to step up and play? Threaten his livelihood/job/role"

Having Martin in there and people clamoring how great he's been and Godfrey having his starting spot threatened made this guy man up. I think a huge problem with him was that he was just GIVEN the starting job as a rookie. Yeah, he earned it to a degree, but was basically given it b/c he was a second rounder and we didn't have anything better athletic-wise.

After he was just given the starting spot, sometimes it just seemed like he was going through the motions. When people saw Martin and wanted him to take over, it shook Godfrey up and let him know that if he wanted to keep his job he had to have some proof that he deserved it - and he's played 100x better...

I can say Godfrey playing last night was the best he ever play this season so far. He still need to tackle better, but at least that was a good one when he knock the ball out of Rice's hands & Harris got it. And I wouldn't be surprise if him playing good last night is competition from Martin. Sometime having a competition is a good thing, 'cause it can make one play harder & better.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
