If Weis becomes the OC...

weis QBs have to be really smart....i'm not sure that fits anyone we have on the roster currently. i see more of a technician type QB than a gunslinger. i mean, it could work with someone on the roster, i just don't know who it would be.

i do know that if you got a weis QB and another WR to complement smitty with weis having full control over the offense, the panthers would be a whole lot more competitive and would make it a lot easier to get those back to back winning seasons. i think he's probably the only one that fox would allow to have total control of the offense.

he tried to get him when he first came here and he was the one that suggested davidson to fox. seems like he is the one that fox has always wanted. he'll probably try and woo shamu in here after the season is done if he hasn't already started.

oh....and i would probably be more in favor of getting quinn just because he'd be easier to get and cheaper. i'd feel comfortable with whoever he thought should be QB, though.

...then the natural next step in things would be to get a Weis pupil for quarterback.

Which of these choices would you prefer?

1) Make a trade for Brady Quinn (difficult, but doable)

2) Make a trade to draft Jimmy Claussen (very difficult, but still probably doable)

3) Let Weis coach up a re-signed Matt Moore or Josh McCown

Yes, there is also the option of getting an outside QB, but for the purposes of this discussion, I'm limiting the choices to the options shown.

all could be had i think, and wouldnt that be some poo.

I don't think that quarterback is the issue as long as the OC can create an offense built for the players that they have. Weis has always been good at adapting and innovating. I think our offense would be better no matter who we had at quarterback. With that being said, none of the guys we could pick up will be better than Moore next year. I like picking up a quarterback in the draft but don't see them starting right away. We also have 2 veteran backups who would be as good as a guy like Brady Quinn at this point. So I would have to say door number 3, Monte.

Anyone have any skinny into who among the current staff might be in favor and have a chance to move up if Fox is gone. How are guys like Davidson and Meeks seen at this point.

No to Clausen because of what it would take to get him combined with the amount of time it will take for him to develop.

No to Quinn because he is Brady Quinn.

IMO Moore has earned the right to the starting job next year no matter who the OC is.

As for Weis, I think a lot will depend on what other offers he gets and from whom. If NE comes calling then aside from the HC position at Carolina there would be no chance of getting him. However, if he only gets OC offers from teams like KC or Buffalo then I could see a chance of him coming to Carolina as a "consultant" / passing game coordinator. The main problem I see with Weis coming here is that I don't think he would like the fact that Fox hired Davidson just to get him so him coming in as the OC would probably be very unlikely.

Moore has earned a chance to compete for the starting job next season during training camp. He shouldnt be handed the job. I want to see a real competition next year at TC. I am starting to lean toward grabbing a veteran FA next year and have Moore/ Jake/ Vet FA battle it out. Just dont think we can go into next year with Jake/ Moore/ rookie QB.

How bout Moore vs. FA battle. Loser battles Jake for the number 2 spot. I don't even want Jake in consideration for the starting spot right now. I don't trust him any more, even if he looks like the best in practice.

Honestly that would be unfair to Jake. Dont know what it is this year but you have to give a chance to win his starting job back. Now if he did I would expect a very short leash.

But to me the best option is just to take the hit on Jake and cut him after this season.

Granted. I'm just speculating.

Entirely possible that neither Fox nor Weis is coaching in Carolina next season.

But if they are, who do you want under center?

Just my .02....

Personally, I would LOVE for us to bring in Charlie Weis. I like Davidson, and think our problems at QB and overly conservative style have handcuffed him as it did Henning, but Weis is a master at deveoping the passing game, which has been our Achilles heel for at least the past 2 seasons.

With that said, I don't see Weis being viable candidate for new OC in Carolina if Fox's contract isn't extended. It wouldn't make sense for Weis to hitch his wagon to Fox now, especially with him having only one year left on his contract. As long is Fox's long-term future is in doubt, then the odds of Weis coming to coach alongside his long-time friend will be slim IMO.

Yea I know you are right, I just hate the thought of him starting again right now:puke:

Why would we have to get rid of Davidson if Weis came over to Carolina? Has anyone thought about keeping Davidson but just demote him and let him work soley at one position? We could always move Maguzu (sp?) back to TEs and make Davidson the offensive line coach.

IMO it would make more sense to move Davidson to TE/Assistant OL Coach (he coached TE/OLs in New England before going to Cleveland). Magazu has done a tremendous job with the OL the past few seasons, and it wouldn't make sense to change that for the sake of bringing in Weis. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Besides, not many coordintors will take a demotion to remain with the same team. If Weis is brought in there's a good chance that Davidson will be gone.

    • MHS, You are missing Claudin Cherelus is a LB that's in the mix for the 4th spot. He's been here for 2 years and had a couple injuries. I mean he was a wavier claim and been here for evero system, just had bad luck when given a chance. Jon Rhat is the current leader mainly cause of he is the ST ace. But Id say, Cherelus has the same % to make the roster.  CB has the recent wavier claim of MJ Devonshire a 2024 7th rounder. He's got the good-great combine numbers but he's small size. Still he's in the mix for backup duties, in fact all the non-UDFA are wavier claims.  ______________________________________________________________   Dam shame about Clowney. I view this as a bad move. I feel clowny is well worth the 7.7, even as a backup. He played hard the whole year without help. I just feel he would have helped more than either DJ Johnson or Barno.  My only cope is he's 32 and at any point his miro-knee could force him to drop off a cliff performance-wise. I wanted to keep him around at least until the trade deadline and if no chance at playoff, flip him for a anything. NFL is a meat grinder, no love for locals....
    • Might as well. We need to get these rookies on the field and see if they can play ASAP.
    • This hate this part of football and then you have to get down to the 53 Man Roster 🙁
