So Delhomme is as good as gone now, right?

sorry to bust your bubble... Delhomme will get a chance to compete for the #1 spot, and at worse he will be #2.

You crack me up sometimes AK. Do you really think that Delhomme will be back? So you honestly don't think that anybody will be held accountable by Jerry Richardson over this abortion of a season?

When I talk heat, Im talking from the FO. They know how Jake cost us games. They know how dumb it will be. If they get another chance, the extension wont matter. Fox winning will cure that. And he know thers not a good chance that Jake will lead them to winning.

Are you sure there's heat from the FO? A big part of our FO (Hurney) gave Delhomme the extension and has backed him.

Jake has been costing us games since the season started (and killed our playoff run last year), yet was the starter until it didn't matter. They didn't realize how dumb that was at the time.

No one really knows for sure what is going to happen with Delhomme. I know I would like to still have him as a backup, but I'm not sure that that will happen. I know one thing for sure though, if Delhomme becomes the starter again (other than from injury), I'm going to be one pissed off person!

I can't see the Delhomme being released after the contract extension given him earlier this year. Why would the FO make that kind of investment in him if they thought they might have to release him (and he's guaranteed millions as it is)? Of course, as a backup, he becomes quite the dilemma as well, in that it's hard to justify paying that kind of money to a non-starter who is healthy. I have no problem with them keeping Jake if a serious conract re-working is done, he'd be a good guy to have as a #2 QB. At his age, it's likely that Jake is not a 16 game QB anymore. That's what has happened to Favre, he may be brilliant for most of the season, but he's been wearing down and out in December the last few years, something the Packers were aware of when they finally quit indulging him and his annual "I'm retired, I'm un-retired" dramas. Develop Moore, address the other critical needs the team has (WR, O and D line depth, special teams), and see if Jake wants to be part of that process.

Then live with whatever is decided.

That's what I'm thinking. Even though our record doesn't show it, we slowly became one of the laughing stocks in the league in the beginning and the fanbase morale has dropped alot before the Vikings game. Like I said in my OP, Delhomme and Peppers will prolly be the scapegoats for this season.

I don't think we can do too much re-working to Jake's contract since he is guaranteed alot of that money. I think by keeping Jake, we're wasting a roster spot. I think McCown or a few free agent QBs could easily beat out Jake at this point. It's like the Raiders and JaMarcus...we have almost no chance with him in there

My fear is if the Panthers happen to pull off finishing the season with the win against MN, then beating the Giants and Saints (Which I think is possible. The tough game will be the Giants because the Saints are going to sit everybody) then JR might not hold anybody accountable for this lost season.

Regarding Jake I think he is in training camp with Moore, a free agent QB, a drafted QB, and that guy on the practice squad. I think McCown maybe will be in camp, but if anything will be the one cut. If we have a new coach then its more likely Jake will be cut and McCown hangs around.

NFL facts: Bad seasons happen. Players have bad years. Good coaches will keep their jobs.

Main thing: It's not easy winning in the NFL and the Panthers are not yet a franchise ready to have several winning seasons in a row. Still need to work towards building traditions and a winning culture. I think Fox is the best guy to get this done without having to do a massive rebuilding--which could send us the other direction.

That being said, we have already surpassed many long-time franchises. Our expansion brother Jaguars envy our franchise's success. The Texans/Browns are not even close and would love to be in our situation. Our fair weather and spoiled fanbase has set expectations way too high.

I don't doubt he's here next year.. I just doubt that it's truly a fair and open competition. Why would any QBs come here if they don't get a real chance at the first string?

If Fox is here, then he needs to make sure the best guy is actually in there for the job. Not just the one he feels most comfortable with.

i think fox has a better shot of getting canned than delhomme.

richardson played football, he knows very well that Players get in a funk.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
