UVA interested in Rip Scherer

UVA may come calling for Panthers QB coach Scherer

The Roanoke (Va.) Times is reporting that the University of Virginia is interested in hiring Panthers quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer as their new offensive coordinator. Scherer has spent the vast majority of his 35 years in coaching at the college level and has had held a few positions in the Virginia area, including the head coaching position at James Madison.

Scherer was brought in to help Jake Delhomme fix his mechanics this year, but it didn’t work as Delhomme threw 18 interceptions in his worst NFL season.

It would make sense for Scherer, as well as other assistants around the league, to begin bolting for the college level with lockout looming after the 2010 NFL season.

I can't judge him poorly for not fixing Delhomme. Delhomme was just that inconsistent.

But, Moore came out and did really well overall as we all know. If any of that is attributable to Scherer then we may be best served by keeping him.

It's really lame that Darin (or the Panthers organization using Darin as their mouthpiece) have implied and continue to push an excuse Rip Scherer had something to do with Delhomme's awful performance this season. Last year it was Mike McCoy.

i kind of took it that jake was unfixable.

:iagree: We have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!!!!

Can't blame Scherer. Delhomme just can't get it done anymore and was average at best before the TJ surgery. I'm not sure when people are going to figure this out.

Martz is available.

He'd never work as an OC for the Panthers under Fox, but as a QB coach...

I'd have to give it some thought...

(Ditto Jim Zorn, he's good as a position coach)

Given the choice, I'd probably prefer to keep Scherer rather than have Moore deal with a new coach.

Based on what? He had Quinn and Anderson in Cleveland....and neither is still worth a crap.
you can give a master sculptor a pile of crap and no matter what he does in the end it's still a pile of crap. not the sculpture's fault that he was given a pile of crap to start off with.

based on what i saw him doing with the QBs compared to other QB coaches I have seen, he does a good job. others saw a huge difference in how he worked with the QBs in OTAs and practice as well. lot of fundamentals and mechanics. TMI for jake but for a young QB with talent and room to grow your going to see some positive results.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
