Who else wanted Bryce???

So with Frank getting fired there has been several narratives that are being pushed repeatedly.

One of which is that Frank got Bryce forced on him.  This is largely based on some reports that Tepper had heavy influence in us selecting Bryce.  " Heavy influence" in itself is a pretty vague term.

Did Tepper during the offseason tell the front office and coaches we needed to draft one of the top QBs and develop them?  That is very possible, we had tried the retread route for the previous 5 years, didn't seem to work.  By most accounts it was a pretty good QB class, and we had a really high pick.  Honestly a lot of the fans wanted us to go that route.  That would be considered influencing.

What if the majority of the front office and coaches preferred Young and Tepper agreed with that and said let's make it happen.  Owners usually sign off on big trades, especially to #1.  That would also be considered influencing.

What I don't believe though is that everyone in the organization wanted Stroud, but Tepper overruled them for Bryce.  That just doesn't make sense, as the article that Mr. Scot just linked from Albert Breer states that Tepper often knows his limitations from a football perspective.  I can't see him overruling the HC, GM, OC, QB coach, and Caldwell if they all felt like Stroud was better.

Maybe if everyone was split, he was the deciding factor, that would be possible, more probably was that the majority liked Young and it wasn't so much Tepper influencing them to choose Young, but them influencing Tepper to prefer Young.  Once all the parties presented the arguments for both Tepper could have preferred Young, that is very possible.   If anythign Tepper's influence was more to go "get your guy" and their guy being Young.

There is also a lot of talk about Frank liking Stroud, a lot of that is based on some guy telling Frank he has an idea of who Frank likes based on waht Frank preferring in the past.  Let me clarify this isn't Frank saying what type of QB he likes, but some reporter telling Frank that he thinks he knows what Frank likes.

Either way lets go with the Idea that Frank did like Stroud, maybe even McCown also, then who is left to steer Tepper towards Young.  If Stroud fits the profile of, what Frank likes couldn't you make an argument that maybe Fitt liked Young, Fitt was used to a successful QB in Seattle who was short, also one of the plusses for Young in most scouting reports was his ability to make things happen outside of structure, which is very similar to Russ.  Maybe the scouts preferred Young, maybe the OC?

It's not crazy to think the GM and HC were split on which QB to take.

I find it very difficult to believe that there was a true consensus on a 5'10" QB with no stand out physical traits. I'm not buying that.

Thats a very logical opinion.  If we believe that is too be true and also that Frank and possible McCown preferred Stroud, who is left to prefer Young?  I don't buy that it was just Tepper.

Did anyone start a post with a poll predraft about who they’d pick after we traded for the #1 overall pick? If so I wonder how huddlers in this forum chose? Was it like 90% Stroud? Or was it tilted towards Bryce or Richardson? Anyone know or remember?

I wasn’t posting back then, but it seems like a thread that someone would have created.

Probably Tepper and Fitts. I imagine scots we're probably all over the place with some preferring Stroud, some Young, and some Richardson.

It’s always the wording.  In the end, universal consensus.   I mean, I told you so arguments aren’t going be good in lots of NFL environments.  Once the tide turns in a clear direction, the wise move is to just get on board.  Essentially every team has staff that endorses someone who wasn’t their actual preferred option.

I just go back to every draft.  Pick a random spot.  Narrative is always that is exactly who everyone wanted and just happened to be #1 on our board.   It could be a random 4th rounder.

No one is going to have everyone actual agree on a pick.  I’m sure plenty thought trading up was dumb to begin with.  But at a certain point, if you are part of the team you endorse it as the best move simply because it was the move made.  And your job is to fall In line at the end.

There were a lot of Stroud folks, especially before it became clear what they were doing.  But I think most were similar to me.  While I was a Stroud guy, I just was content in the end a swing would be attempted.   Whether that ended up being Richardson or Bryce too.

and I still think if you actually had skill talent that was good and fit what Bryce does well with creative coaching…he wouldn’t suck.  If I would have known what they were going to it around Bryce…I would have been against it.  He was always the low ceiling guy.  He is the most dependent on the cast around him

It was pretty even split 45 Bryce 45 stroud 9% Richardson 1% Levis

I think my final rankings were Stroud, Richardson, Young, Levis but I warmed up to the idea of Richardson late

I said all along I could fully understand the arguments for and against the top 3 prospects and I would be fine with whoever the staff settled on buy my preference was Richardson by a hair, followed by Stroud, followed by Bryce with the caveat that interviews would be huge for Richardson's evaluation. I just always felt that Bryce had a very steep hill to climb physically.

Most of the people I know were for Richardson or Stroud early on. It seemed Bryce picked up a lot of steam after Alabama’s Proday. Like all the Mocks in the Media seemed to switch to him as an almost consensus #1. I couldn’t really understand it. I always favored Stroud- but I knew it would be Bryce after we traded to #1. I like appreciate Bryce’s effort and hope he can grow into a decent player for us- Im skeptical about him ever living up to what we expect of a player we took so high and gave up so much to get though.
