The Annual Midnight Vigil...

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

...coming to a computer screen near you this Thursday night

For a change, it actually has some Panther related intrigue this season. Not because of who might be arriving, mind you. This time it's more about who's leaving, and where he's headed.

With the word already out that the Bears have talked to Peppers' agent, they'd seem the most likely landing spot. Hard to count out the Redskins, though. After all, they can finalize a hundred million dollar contract in a matter of hours :sosp:

(wouldn't rule out the Eagles or Patriots, either)

As an aside, I've actually long wished that the league would just allow teams and players to go ahead and start negotiating two or three days before free agency actually starts, but hold off on the announcements until the free agent period officially opens. Realistically, it happens anyway, so why not just control it?

So...predictions on Peppers (team, contract terms, etc) and/or on the first team to land a new player? Surprising releases. Trade scenarios, etc.

Peppers prediction.

There will be a game of chicken between the few teams considering his services.

A little nonchalant maybe we'll offer you a contract in hopes of a cheaper price.

We'll see.

Ain't no one going to pay him the way the Panthers have the last two years, over 30 million dollars.

I'll throw out a trade that I don't realistically see happening, but that I'd consider if I were Hurney.

Dwayne Jarrett to the Giants for Osi Umenyiora.

It makes sense on both sides, honestly. The Giants could use some more receiver options, and we'd get an "anchor" DE in return. Throw in too that both sides are down on the respective player, so a change of scenery might do all parties good.

Of course, straight player for player trades rarely happen these days. And while I think an argument could be made that this is an even trade, I doubt the Giants would see it that way. Most I'd throw in to complete it would be a 6th round pick, so they'd likely balk.

It's an idea, though.

Nice try with a rationalization, but it's been made clear by this post that Mr. Scot's account has been hacked!

I strongly believe Peppers will join the Bears if he wants. They don't have a 1st and a 2nd in this years draft. Plus... they need a pass rusher, and I don't doubt they would be the team to pay him 15 mil a season either. Eagles is the team I personally don't want Pep on, that would make them even more dangerous in the playoffs.

Anyways, I hope we sign somebody though.

Though I am not overly anxious to see Osi U in a Panther Uniform. Mostly because if his talent has dwindled down to second string tfor the Giants then it would be long before he is out of the league completely.

Unfortunately we won't find out until the preseason if Moore is going to be our #1QB. If he is I finally see Jarrett having a breakout season.

However, if Jake is still with us. Then we might as well see what is left in Osi's tank. Jake won't throw to Jarrett.

Go Panthers

If there is anyway we can trade for Umenyiora then I would be up for that, he played muuuuch better than his press would have you believe and I am just stunned he is on the out with the Giants FO. The ONLY reason they could think of dumping him, would be because he simply is not a team player and is not great in the locker room, which would be a bit of a red flag.

He also appears to be a bit like Pep in that he flashes hot and cold, with his numbers often being inflated with one or two stunning performances.

However he is now a year removed from a tearing the lateral meniscus, which is not the most severe injury but it certainly would have thrown his game off for a while. Simply missing a season will hurt your progress as a player.

That said this is what he achieved:

6 sacks, 14 hits, 19 pressures in 382 pass rush snaps (10.2%)

Compared to Peps

10 sacks, 10 hits and 33 pressures in 446 pass rush snaps (11.8%)

He signed a 6 year deal in 2005 that keeps him under contract through the 2012 season, which means we would get to have a look at him for 3 seasons. His deal also is not too bad as it averages around $7 million a year, however I have no idea if the deal is backloaded at all.

He WOULD be a good pickup considering our situation. I would not give up any picks for him as we simply need those. If they would consider a player + change of picks then that is something that would be worth considering.

The Giants already have the other Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks who they just drafted in the first round last year who will be their starters. Mario Manningham has been better than Jarrett and there are rumors they are trying to deal him..so why in the heck would they deal a good defensive end for a lackluster player at a position that they have an abundance of?

With our need at WR, I'd rather keep Jarrett around and give him more playing time to see if we can squeeze anything out of him.

I'm one of those guys that believes Charles Johnson and Everette Brown can/will step up and get the job done for us at DE.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
