How incompetent are the Panthers as a franchise/team/organization?

I think it's pretty extreme, not to mention stupid, for some joe blow fan to think they could run an NFL team better than people who have been doing it for a living for years and years too.

Some joe blow fan can tell the Panthers need serious help at WR, they need a legit # 2. They have a decent #3 in Jarrett. They most likely aren't going to get that legit #2 from either the draft of the second FA signing period. Kevin walter would've been nice and only had like two teams seriously go after him. So he wouldn't have broke the bank. He signed a 5 year deal worth 21.5 million with 8 guaranteed. Nate didn't get a huge deal either from the Lions.

There is still another FA period, is there not? I am not worried yet. If that FAP () passes and we do nothing, then maybe I will worry, but right now I don't see the reason to panic.
same here.

FA was going to be really weak this year anyway with the changes from having an uncapped year.

what happens at the front end of FA period is setting the ceiling as far as $$ is concerned. those who go are usually picked up for a whole lot more money and for longer contracts than they deserve. the "premiere" FA class this year is mediocre at best and not really much better at all than the FAs that are left on the board or that will be available soon. the people that go are ones that have already proven that they are good enough to get a big contract. most of the time that is all they were working for and you see a drop off in production.

what i prefer is going after those cheaper players with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. you can find a lot of these guys and from the cream that rises you can find yourself some incredible value. what guys can you get this way? tyler brayton, na'ill diggs, keydrick vincent, and there have been a good few others who have done big things for us that have been acquired that way. you know what? we'll get more.

quit hitting the panic button or resorting to this fatalistic crap. it isn't as bad as you think. it could be a lot worse....we could have just signed a player to a six year $91mil deal who is far from being worth it.

the team has only a few holes to fill and it won't take much to fill them to the extent that we are competitive this year.

Walter also played in a WCO. Those guys don't seem to do well here. Besides, isn't Charly Martin basically a younger and cheaper version of the same type of player?

Lets see

holes to fill

2 WR at least (1 needs to be a legit threat to help smith out)

2 Cb's maybe 3 (the third is if Marshall is nabbed)

1-2 DE (adding to the rotation)

1 DT (add to the rotation)

1 OL (depth)

1-2 LB's (mainly for ST's, maybe one to push for the starting SLB)

1 KOS ( I don't want either Kasey or baker doing Kos.)

KR/PR (please....................... He can be one of the WR's or CB's)

1 QB (back up, preferably a vet)

Walter is basically a young Moose, 6-3 214 with good speed and an heck of an option in the redzone. Also a fantastic blocker.

i think we need more than 1 DT.....we don't even know if we have 1 legitimate starter at this point.

Interesting that you never hear from these big spending, make an early splash in free agency teams when it comes time for meaningful games. When was the last time a team actually bought its way to a championship. The Bears tried last year and it failed, so what did they do? They went out and spent even more money this year for an aging, underperforming prima donna. The Redskins have been trying this strategy since 2000 and tried again last year with Haynesworth. Look where it got them. Remember when the Panthers went through this phase with Reggie White, Chuck Swann and Shaun Gilbert? How did that go?

So for those of you who want to complain about not getting "big name" free agents, you should remember that they dont hand out Lombardis or even winning records in March and April.

Well, I would rather not bring in another WCO WR. The Panthers have tried that before and it didn't work out very well.

Besides, the guy re-signed with the Texans, so we probably never had a shot in the first place, without over paying him.

1. Agreed

2. I disagree with this, I think we only need 1 and hope that 1 is Dante Wesley, great special teamer.

3. I agree, hopefully we draft one and bring back Brayton.

4. Agreed 1 more

5. Agreed

6. I think we may only need 1, I think Ivy is going to be decent depth

7. Agreed

8. Agreed

9. Agreed

The thing is, we probably won't even know who they are really interested in until they sign somebody. We should all know this by now. Even the Keyshawn Johnson signing came out of the blue.

No it didnt. Everyone knew he was in town the night before he signed. Every free agent we ever signed we knew they were visiting with before it happened.

The bottomline is that the panthers should have been active finding a receiver on day one of free agency. They cannot depend on a 2nd or 3rd round rookie to take all the pressure off of Smith and moore. Very stupid of the panthers to sit back when they could have had Bolden for a 3rd

Wow, you mean people knew KJ was in town a few hours before he signed? That's a real heads up, I'll give you that.

BTW, hows that "Delhomme will be the starter in 2010, and anybody who disagrees with me is an idiot' thing working out for you?
