I love Asheville, myself, but it sounds like you guys might be bigger fans of the beach. Charleston really is an awesome place to visit. You've got the beaches, shops, museums, plenty of historical sites, and my favorite part of the city, awesome food. If you've never been, you really should check it out.

Your kids might enjoy what Myrtle has to offer, but I hate Myrtle Beach.

I like Asheville a lot as well, but a lot of it is stuff like driving on the Trail or staying in a cool hotel for me, which is not usually a little kids cup of tea. Charleston has some swanky stuff but seems more kid friendly to me, without the trashiness that is Myrtle Beach.
