Burns is a two-time Pro-Bowler and has been productive relative to his pay just like many good young players in the league, and likewise hasn't even hit his prime. Furthermore, he's had to play in several systems under not so good circumstances. In 2023, like this metric or not, Burns did not get the opportunities to do what he does best, as we didn't have any leads in the fourth quarter and weren't in a position to pin our ears back and go get the passer. Despite a down 2023, any NFL type will tell you that Burns would be a nice piece to have. The biggest problem with Burns is not that he's overrated, (even here on the Huddle), but that he wants to be overpaid. He isn't a superstar but wants to be paid like one. That's a huge problem. He thinks he's worth more than his play has indicated. Those are the facts.

Those are excuses. He's been here 5 seasons and has been just average at best. Pro-Bowls are not a good metric to use to evaluate a players value as its a popularity contest more than anything. He's done nothing to deserve a raise here. Let him go be "elite" somewhere else because he sure as hell is not nor will he ever be here.

I don't think he is as mediocre as many say on here, but I also don't believe he's a top-tier DE.  He's worth keeping but not with an elite contract.   The non-exclusive tag will show what other teams think he is worth.   If no one is willing to give up draft picks for him than he and his agent will have to come down off the elite number.

Maybe the best way to go about it is a reasonable contract with incentives that boost the salary.  It motivates him to play hard and reach those milestones to get more money.

I love how people downplay the Pro Bowl; all I know is at the end of the day, the only players I have seen in the Pro Bowl are good ones, not "average" ones.

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree. Only on the Huddle will you find people saying that Burns "doesn't deserve a raise" or is "average." Come on, Snow, you're being uncharacteristically reactionary.

I'm being realistic and not a humor with process blue colored shades on. Brian Burns is not a player we should be investing anymoretime and money on. Its as simple as that.

It's wholly unrealistic to think we were just going to simply let him go on his merry way without franchising him or coming to a longer term agreement.

Oh they will sign him for far more than he's worth and be stuck with his under performing ass for another 5 years while they struggle to build a defense around him in an attempt to make him an "elite" edge rusher. Only the Rams were dumb enough to offer a trade and the team turned it down. They are not trading him for anything of value now unless it a single 2nd round pick if their lucky. Turning down the Rams offer sealed their fate.  It's either pay him or let him walk.

Definitely.  I do think we need to get Derrick Brown signed before we deal with Burns.  If we can somehow get an extension done with Brown, we now have more bargaining power with Burns.  By signing Brown, we have control of Burns for the next 2 seasons.

I love the thinking, I just don't see how we're going to presently swing it. That's what Tillis was hired for though: to maneuver the cap. Unlike yesterday, I feel better about being able to get something done with DB.

Bet you can't find someone who says we should not keep Burns or that he is overvalued.

I don't mean internet randos. I mean actual quotes from a professional, either media or inside the NFL - the people who's job it is to live and breath NFL football. Bet you can't find anyone who's an actual professional speak about Brian Burns the way the huddle does.

Fans of 31 teams would raise their hands if asked if they'd like Brian Burns on their team.

The huddle way undervalues him. I'm not saying he's worth $30MM, don't get it twisted. Y'all act like he's one of the worst players on defense. It's absolute insane to me.

I see you conveniently left out the part of my post where I talked about actual facts and his stats and said nothing about him being one of the worst players on defense. In response to a post that insinuated he should be basically untouchable as far as trade talks go. We turned down 2 firsts and a second and there was about half the board that swore up and down it was the right call and that it was illogical to expect to get another player of his caliber with the draft picks.

He’s a 9 sack/yr. pass rush specialist that many on the huddle value as a 12 sack/yr. 3 down complete edge.

And, for the record, I think way more people will be jumping for joy if we can trade Burns than keep him, because they realize that the draft capital is more important to a team that is rebuilding.

I’d be happy with a first and third for him after this past season and his unreasonable contract expectations. Who knows if anybody will even give up that much at this point.

My reason, beyond the draft picks, that makes we want to get him traded.

Evero seems to really know how to make the most out of what we have.  I think we could find a FA that could fill the roll for a year or two while we build a new team.  Evero will make the adjustment.

Keeping Burns, though he is a very talented player, doesn't really help us move past the Rhule/Reich mess we have had.  I think our best interest is signing and trading him or let someone offer him a deal through the NE franchise tag.
