An NFL scout comments on the draft experts

From PFT: Todd McShay backlash builds

The basics...

Todd McShay sucks and everybody hates him (heck, some would suggest even Mel Kiper hates him).

They used to hate Kiper ("Who in the hell is Mel Kiper Jr?" - Bill Tobin, then Colts GM) but they respect him now because he works his hair off and has earned it.

Mike Mayock is the best in the business.

Not sure how many here would remember the late Joel Buchsbaum, but he wrote Pro Football Weekly's draft coverage for years and was on target far more often than not. I'd crown him king of the draftniks, were he still alive. He died relatively young.

(occurs to me I perhaps should have put this in the draft forum)

My rankings:

1. Mayock

2. McShay, who I actually like

3. NFLDraftCountdown.com dude

...

84,826,861,081,728. Mel Kiper Jr.

My problem with Kiper is how little he studies the teams and their actual needs and compares that to their history, one example is the insistence that the Panthers were a dead lock to draft Greg Olsen while the rest if us knew there was a minimal, if any chance of that happening.

mayock is only guy I would never doubt. All the other analysts just don't do enough homework to really have a respectable opinion.

Mayock said that Mendenhall and McFadden would both be better than Jonathan Stewart...Since then I have questioned him.

I aslo liked the Fightin Illini more than J-Stew

In their behalf, their Olines sucks.

In fairness, it's hard to judge anyone's talent when they play for the Raiders.

(except JaMarcus; fat and lazy doesn't work well in any system)

Horrid horrid lies.

He was always insisting Stew was the best back in the draft and had him at the top of his draft board throughout the drafting period. The only knock, according to Mayock, was that he was injured.

Many struggled to believe him that McFadden was not the best back, yet he always pointed out that Stewart finished his runs, whereas McFaden invariably went down on first contact.

Mendenhall he was unsure of because he only had one good year.

Not sure if you are getting Mayock confused with someone else, but he routinely stated that Stewart was the best back in the '08 draft.

    • With a better coach we would have 10 wins already With better receivers we would have 10 wins already With better pass protection we would have 10 wins already With a better defense we would have 10 wins already
    • 27th in PF 25th in yards May not be bottom 3 but it is still close to the bottom.    2024: 23th in PF 29th in Yards Still bottom of the league even after Bryce came back.  I am pretty much resigned that if the Panthers want to win a SB with Bryce they are gonna have to build an elite defense, kinda like what the Broncos had in 2015 or even this year. Because I doubt the Panthers will ever be more than a 32-20th ranked offense with Bryce at the helm.  Even with that a SB is gonna be hard to reach. I mean the last time a defense carried a bad offense to a SB was 2015.
