Depth at safety could become an issue for Panthers

The Panthers’ youth movement left them without great depth at certain positions, and Carolina doesn’t exactly have a strong Plan B if the new starting safety tandem of Charles Godfrey(notes) and Sherrod Martin(notes) doesn’t stay healthy or performs poorly. The decision to trade Chris Harris(notes) to the Bears in April led Carolina to move Godfrey from free safety to strong safety, positioning Martin to fill the void left by Godfrey’s shift. Martin made several big plays as a rookie and started five games when Godfrey, who had a disappointing follow-up to a strong rookie campaign, was out because of an injury. The Panthers’ other safeties include veterans Aaron Francisco(notes) and Marcus Hudson(notes) and rookies Jordan Pugh(notes), a sixth-round pick, and Matt O’Hanlon(notes), who went undrafted. Francisco and Hudson are career special-teamers. Pugh and O’Hanlon are unknown commodities. It’s not yet clear who the primary backups will be at each spot, and safety depth could become an issue if the rookies don’t assert themselves.

Is Fransico that bad on defense? I don't see us having that big of a problem at safety. Pugh and O'Hanlon are unproven but I think they will fill in just fine if Hudson and Fransico don't. If Martin and Godfrey get injured/dont perform then we have 4 other guys that could step up. What are the odds that 4 other players couldn't perform well at safety?

Sherrod Martin had to get more playing time, he might be that big playmaker we are missing. This article, while seeming intelligent, doesn't really tell us anything, yeah we have a bit of a depth issue but what happens if Smith goes down? I'd rather have a safety duo of Martin and Pugh or Martin and Hudson for a couple of games than having no Steve Smith. If your best players get injured your going to be in trouble no matter what. dumb article. next.

Seriously? FS and SS are both the definition of hybrids. Free Safety is a CB lacking speed, and SS is a linebacker lacking size... Those are the positions that you put play-makers who don't fit prototype size/speed combo's. A Safety goes down, you put a CB or WLB there... this is a non-issue, and almost silly to worry about. If you've got plenty of LB's and CB's, then you're fine at either S position.

    • If you're looking for a pat on the back it sounds good in theory until you realize they also had the 2023 Panthers as the top draft class.
    • Going into the 2003 and 2015 seasons we were supposed to be the joke of the league each time. In 2003, John Fox was supposed to still be in rebuild mode. We had a guy named Peppers on the defensive line who was supposed to be pretty good. We had Rodney Peete as our starting QB and a line that was a lot of hope and not much experience. Our new running back was a guy the Redskins, errrr Commanders, had jettisoned for being too old. We had a good kicker and writers thought that was needed because there were going to be more field goals than touch downs. Heck, it looked like they were right up until just before halftime of that first game when we had to yank Rodney Peete and put in some Cajun duded whose name couldn't be pronounced. And Steve Smith? He wasn't Smitty yet. Moose Muhammad, well, he was close to being written off as a bust. You know how that turned out. And then in 2015, we had Cam Newton, who was electrifying to watch but hadn't really won anything yet. There was an offensive line in front of him that looked like it was made in a defunct Swiss cheese factory and our big hope on offense was the great Kelvin Benjamin. And then he got taken out for the year with a knee injury in training camp. Ted "Feet of Lightning, Hands of Stone" Ginn became our default go to guy beside our next best hope, yeah, Devin Funchess. Our defense was pretty good, a scrappy bunch with frikkin' awesome linebacker play and a cornerback who had done more than drank the Kool-Aid, but had snorted the powder. He played like a superhero and became sort of a bat-man during the season. By the Super Bowl he had completely lost his freaking mind, though, and managed to talk his way out of a contract with the team next year. No one was expecting us to win the NFCSouth that season, much less almost go undefeated and into the Super Bowl. So, 2026? Who knows? But our best seasons came when no one had a reason to believe in us, except us.
    • it's not so much this personal vendetta against the Carolina Panthers as it is more about Bryce Young never not once been in the same conversation with the top 15 or even top 20 Qbs in the NFL ..just saying
