ed johnson

i was looking through youtube and visited some clips of panthers mini camp. saw that ed johnson #99 who was suppose to be a major part of the new dline wasnt pleasing the line coach some bit. seems lazy or out of place. thinking we should find another DT to add depth. why not jon henderson.

I think they're just kicking the tires on Ed to see if he has anything left. I was at mini-camp (I shot those vids) and I can tell you Brian Baker was riding Ed Johnson all practice for not hustling. Hard to tell if Ed was out of shape or just lazy, but in either case it doesn't look good for him right now - this guy was cut by the Colts on performance and didn't have many suitors besides the Panthers (if any) and he shows up to mini-camp out of shape and/or plays without hustle.

Jon Henderson doesn't fit our scheme, I could see us bringing in a guy like Marlon Favorite especially since he showed well here last year.

Anyone else very concerned with our DT depth? I still can't believe we passed on Jeff Owens in the 6th.

I am. I was hoping we'd draft Cam Thomas, even knowing he doesn't fit our system. He was one of the higher-ranked DT's on the board, so when he fell I was hoping we'd move into the fifth to grab him.

The defensive line as a whole is a concern for me. I know Brayton will be solid and I have confidence in Johnson to step up and maybe get ~10 sacks this year, but depth worries me across the board. Leonard and Tyler looked good in limited time last year, but they need to carry that over and stay healthy.

DT is absolutely scary to me right now. I think we might be ducks in a tight spot with this 2011 lockout looming. Still, it seemed to me that this was a very deep DT draft and if that's the case then somebodies gotta fall off those other rosters once things get into full swing again.

You know Fox is looking to get some DT lovin on the cheap and unfortunately I think H will be gone by then anyways.

I doubt Ed has anything left, and I'm not sure he had a ton to begin with. But Jon Henderson is a 6'7 330 lb'er who can play Nose or Under, and gets pressure while clogging the middle. He's not as good as Jenkins, but he's the same type of DT.

He also started mailing it in last year to the point where the coach called him out publicly. That's not what you want in a locker room without a lot of veteran leadership.

How does Jon Henderson not fit our scheme? A DT is a a DT. If they have to adjust, it's very minimal. You're on the line, guy is in front of you. Get through that guy or clog the middle. The end.

I think you might be over-generalizing just a bit. This site has some very good information about different defensive sets in general, and in it there's detailed explanations for the different DT responsibilities in each. That will give you some appreciation for why some DTs work in some defenses and not others. Or why Hayden sucked so bad when he took over for Kemo but not so much when he was backing up Lewis.

I don't see us going after anyone cut by the Jags, but Henderson is one of those rare types who can play multiple roles well.

Thanks for the link. Long read, but I sure learned a lot. Henderson might be able to help us, but I really doubt we bring in anyone else before the start of the season. I still wish we picked up someone like Cam Thomas in the draft.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
