The Carolina Panthers opened their organized team activity season, and cornerback Richard Marshall was back.

The fourth-year cornerback was on the field Monday morning, according to a pair of team sources. The practice was closed to the media, a first during OTAs in coach John Fox's nine years here.

There's been no word of Marshall signing a contract, and messages left with his agent Drew Rosenhaus and general manager Marty Hurney weren't returned. He could have signed the injury protection letter which allows unsigned players to work out with the team without a contract. That's what most restricted free agents did near the beginning of offseason workouts, which Marshall previously had boycotted.

Marshall also stayed away from the mandatory minicamp this month, presumably upset over the lack of a new deal. He was tendered a one-year, $1.759million contract as a restricted free agent. Prior to a set of rules triggered by the uncapped year and pending end of the collective-bargaining agreement between the league and the players union, he would have been an unrestricted free agent this offseason. That probably would have led to a substantial payout, as he likely would have been considered the second-best corner on the market behind Atlanta signee Dunta Robinson.

However, the large class of newly restricted free agents - which included Marshall and linebacker Thomas Davis, who has been here throughout - has little leverage with which to force teams to give them new long-term contracts. If they don't sign by June15, teams can reduce the tender offers to 100percent of last year's base salary, which in Marshall's case would be $583,000.

This is really good news. I hope we can keep Marshall on a reasonable contract, but if not I think we should draft a corner in the first next year. If we can keep him we should go after D-tackle or D-End.

It's sad to see Marshall pulling this primadonna act, TD isn't happy with the tender either but he's out there working with his team. Marshall needs to suck it up and get out on the field.

eh, I can see his point. You'd be pissed off too if you far exceeded expectations and the company you worked for refused to commit to you, even using some archaic contract device to keep you there below your market value.

I can understand why he's not happy about it - TD isn't happy about his contract situation either, but he's out there with his teammates getting ready for the season.

I dont blame Marshall for being upset, or sitting out a bit. He played well last year, and deserves more than what he's getting. I'm glad he's back out there. If he keeps improving, and playing hard out there, he'll get his nice payday.

      Best I heard its a clause the bungals want to add. It prevents them form paying the full guaranteed amount if triggered. No one knows the details of the clause, but guesses are it relates to off-field stuff. Stewart is in the right here. Before they signed burrow, chase, and Higgins they were the cheapest team in the league bar none. Unlike tepper or jarrah Jones or any other NFL ownership, all Mike brown owns is the beagals. Every other owner has many other money making businesses, not bungals.  I still remember when Brenston Bunker was starting on WFNZ and he told the story about the beagals telling him to pick a used cup form a huge pile, LOLS! They been on hard knocks and I remember Marvin lewis telling the players not to take home Gatorade bottles........* but in that case, I believe some players were taking a back pack and filling it up with drinks. Still you make millions(around 200million) in net profit and Im sure coke gave the team those bottles, still... Its a 32 team billion business, someone has to the cheapest.....Panthers were around the next cheapest team before tepper bought them and he has POURED millions upon millions into the team. He bought a bubble that Richardson never would, so the team had to gather in building during the rain. He spent millions on coofus machines that he just gave away like the bubble. Tepper made that AC trailer a thing. I've trashed him about his concerts and taking away end zone seats from fans. But the guy will spend money any way to efforts to better the team, dang I just remembered the deal he gave Rhule- more than Andy Reid at the time.  I know results have not came, but Id 100% take Tepper over Mike brown as a owner.

      There's no way they're shipping you some uniform you haven't seen lol.  I feel like they'd just refund you and ask if you wanted the new one when it launched. Probably just making the blues the primary, or a new helmet for a new alternate/variation.
