Jerry Richardson q&a

We have never been a big player in free agency under Marty Hurney. Many of our best free agent

signings have not received much attention when we signed them. Jake Delhomme did not come

with a lot of attention when he was signed. Players like Ricky Proehl, Mark Fields, Marlon McCree

and Tyler Brayton came to the team with little notice, but were starters and big contributors. The

years when we were big players in free agency did not seem to turn out as well. The approach has

worked well over eight years and we still have the goal of a championship.

So making the Super Bowl isn't a goal?

Davis signed with the Carolina Panthers for the start of the 2003 NFL season, and was a catalyst in leading the team to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Davis rushed for a career-high 1,444 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He also finished in the top three for the NFL MVP voting that year. Davis led all rushers in the postseason with 315 yards

Forget about him?

Read the bold sentence. The year we made a big move in FA, we went to the Super Bowl.

the big move being stephen davis?

...who at the time was an over used 29 year old running back who was dealing with injuries?

...who the panthers' were fortunate enough to squeeze one last good season out of?

not trying to downplay davis at all. but signing him at that time was the equivilent of the jets signing tomlinson.

it's cool, but not percieved as a big deal.

I don't think anyone here gives a poo about free agency. Everyone knows the teams that make big splashes in free agency fail 9 times out of 10. I like Richardson for that.

Does he address his decision to not extend our best players so he can set an example for other owners? If not this interview doesn't interest me.

    • I am high, but that’s besides the point! The blue line is not good right now. I’ve said it all year. I don’t think this group meshes well. Slaven has been just OK Niki up and down Miller up and down ghost and Walker have been your most consistent guys. Maybe it comes together more towards the playoffs
    • I was expecting to see more cap room moves by now, which may be to suggest that we are not going to be that aggressive.  I have mixed emotions about that (because I think we have 3 needs on D and 3 needs on O--starters).  If you look to the draft for 3 starters, that is ambitious.  We need 6
    • Yeah we shouldn’t be competing with teams, bidding wise, to sign a WR. There will be one for us and our budget.  I keep saying, how many balls will there be to go around anyway? One thing good I will say for this offense is the ball has been spread around at times. Seems like I remember seeing a large number of guys have caught passes in a game. Or been targeted at least. 3 RBs 4 or 5 WRs 2-3 TEs type of stat lines. 10-11 guys.  Not every week but that happens.    As far as WR in general, we need the smaller agile and quicker component to compliment what is there. After that it should be about depth, having good backups for the starters so we can run things consistently still, if a guy is out for a week or two. That is especially important in game where you have to finish the game with who you made active.
