Panthers Kick Returner/Returners

Who will be the Panthers Kick Returner/Returners?

Mike Goodson is competing for the Panthers' kickoff return job again this year.

He split kickoff return duties with Tyrell Sutton and Kenneth Moore last season, averaging just 20.7 yards per kick. Brian Witherspoon figures to be the favorite for both punts and kickoffs, but he'll have to make the team first.

One has to like Witherspoon, and lhis 4.29-40 speed.

He would be the only DB with sub 4.4 speed, but the odds may be against him, unless he's clearly the best returner. For him to survive the final cuts, veteran free agent special teams player signings CB-Marcus Hudson, and SS-Aaron Francisco might probably have to be cut.

The change in the wedge rules last season seemed to favor big kick returners though, and Witherspoon only weighs 175, so he might lose out to bigger kick returners like Goodson, or Sutton.

I think it will come down to Witherspoon and Edwards for the returning jobs, both of those guys have game-changing speed. Just another position battle we're going to have to watch in the coming months.

Well, we won't know who really has a chance for the spot until TC.

Right now, they are trying out everyone who can possibly do it.

The real competition won't be until TC.

Goodson will definitely be competing for kick returner, but not punt.

Edwards will probably compete at both spots.

Moore, likely will never be returning kicks for us again as long as the guys we have stay healthy.

I have a strong hunch Witherspoon will end up being the starting KR and PR. Francisco I think most likely wont make it since he's not a coverage safety. I think Edwards will see more significant time at WR in the slot, some as the WR opposite of Smith, and some wildcat QB.

Mike Goodson is too good to be left off the field

Yeah, right.......

Not so sure about that. Fancisco managed to stick with Indy for a while and has been a special teams captain. If we're talking as strictly ST'ers, I'd rather have him than some of the rookies.

With the way the team is structured right now, we'd have to cut a CB (out of 5, 6th being Witherspoon but he's counted soley as returner) or WR (out of 5 including our draft picks and Smitty and Jarrett) or a RB (choosing between Goodson or Sutton) or Marcus Hudson (who is a coverage safety) in order to keep Francisco and I dont see that happening.

    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
    • looks like the Lions and Bangles should forget about the playoffs, trade everyone they can, and start over.
