Pike is already a year away because he has missed most of the post draft camp and OTAs. Besides, he did not play in a pro set offense last season. Neither did Cantwell last year, whose stock arguably dropped more than Pike's, and he looked better than any other QB on the two days I went to OTAs. Pike will go to IR, and there is a battle for the second QB spot, a legitimate one for now. As soon as Clausen adjusts, he will compete for the starting job--but that could take a year. Still, I don't see Cantwell over Clausen if Moore sucks or goes down. We are green, but loaded at QB since Cantwell has come on.

By the way, Steve Berlein was pretty good and a backup to Collins for a while before starting here. IMO, He was the best backup we ever had because I think he is our best QB ever.

Unless we are all wrong, me, Hurney, every other panther fan, Clausen will not be 3rd string.

He will be active on gamedays.

Maybe, but Hurney chose to sign Cantwell too, so it's not impossible that he was right about him and Clausen. Us fans really don't know squat about how these guys are progressing, except for what we read on various web sites, and what a small number of us have seen in two hand touch practices.

Anyway, all I'm saying, is that we should keep an open mind about things, and not put players in a box because of draft status or hype. I sure hope that the Panthers are looking at it my way, because I would hate to see a good player get tossed to the side just because he didn't have enough hype to please everybody. The object is to put the best players on the field...period. If Cantwell is not good enough though, then by all means, they should promote Clausen ahead of him. All I really care about, is who will win games for the Panthers.

Anyway, I'm just glad we have options, for a change.

Remember when the Panthers tossed the undrafted Jake Delhomme to the side to start #1 overall pick David Carr?

Fox will put either the best talent or the most experienced talent on the field. He doesn't seem to give a poo about draft status.

I don't think Buerlein ever played for Fox.

The best players with the most potential should make the team. It doesn't matter whether they were drafted or not.

Pike was drafted in the 6th round. 6th rounders aint that far off from undrafted.

Cantwell has a stronger arm, bigger frame and already knows the system and played well during last preseason.

They player that plays better out of the two at camp/preseason will make it. Remember Cantwell atm is still #2 on the depth chart.

This all sounds good but being drafted does help even if a player is outplayed by a UDFA the drafted player probably will make the team over the UDFA..

cantwell throws a touchdown against 4th-stringers in a preseason game two years ago and all of a sudden he's the best number 2 we've ever had... lol

lets get jeremey leman to replace thomas davis while we're at it

Nobody is going by just the pre season. Just listen to the Panthers coaches and FO talk about Cantwell. They geniunely like how the guy has progressed. I don't know why everybody just assumes that they're lying about this.

Carr never played until Delhomme got hurt, then Carr lost his job to ol man Vinny. Carr technically got hurt to but we didn't call him back.

I guess sarcasm comes hard for some people. I also got neg repped for that post.

After reading the Cantwell article this morning, it confirms what I said last year in training camp. Cantwell looks to have a cannon for an arm. It will be interesting to see how he does in preseason. It he does pretty well, it will be Pike who will be on the practice squad not Cantwell. He looks like the next reclamation project . You have to admit if Cantwell has the arm of Cutler (per the article), then we have gotten a real gem. Cutler's arm without the ego, poor judgement, and extreme cost. He would have to stink it up before we would let him go. I know it is a huge stretch at this point, but what if we have our next franchise quarterback on the rorster and he isn't named Moore or Clausen. That would be hilarious. LOL

How long do you think pike would last on the PS?
