Risers and Fallers per Gantt, 8-18-10

I'm not forming my opinions just yet. Hardy is getting some serious hype behind him. His fame from 2 years ago is still there. He needs some serious time with the starters.

If he produces in the regular season, look out. ESPN hype machine garbage 24/7. If somehow Clausen is starting at the same time, you won't be able to watch without getting diarrhea.

I agree that Leonard and Williams did not fall. We just wanted to hear from them and didn't--both are new. The next games will tell us whether Jarrett sticks or not. Same for Moore. I think one of the two will make the team.

The Jarrett comments last week about his maturity seem to me to have been nothing more that his agent advising him to try to drum up some positive energy before cuts. Again, the Jets game will tell us a lot about the new and improved Jarrett.

Is it possible that Moore and Jarrett are cut? I don't think so, but I think only 1 makes the team. I see us possibly going Smith, LaFell, Wright, Edwards, Jarrett, and Gettis. The only alternative to this might be placing Edwards, who is not ready to play, on IR along with Pike. I think they will if he looks bad vs, NY and TEnn.

To be fair, I remember us thinking the same of Landon Johnson, who was Cincinnatti's leading tackler.

I was just about to say the same thing. Maybe the responsibilities our LBers are expected to handle are pretty tough compared to other teams. Maybe a linebacker for the panthers has to be smarter than the average bear.

Wasn't Johnson a highly productive 3-4 ILB?

The thinking at least from a fan's perspective was that he was getting a ton of tackles because he was all over the field, and he would play better in a 4-3 because he was miscast.

Turned out he was just productive and he did very poorly in a 4-3.

Williams was a back-up that played well in a defense very similar to ours.

So the thinking here is that he's a diamond in the rough, a guy who didn't play because of the talented ahead of him.

Williams is way more likely to succeed than Johnson. Similar system and he's not a big FA signing which we don't do well at. He was a trade which we do well at.

Now the trade was a little iffy as we were just fishing for whatever we could get. They didn't want to totally screw Harris so it worked out for everybody. They were going to cut him either way.

I'm pretty sure Cincy was a 4-3 defense when Johnson played there.

Back then, being the leading tackler on that team was like being the smart kid in the retarded class.

When is Jamar Williams expected to return from his shoulder injury?

.My hope he was going to be our weak side solution when we lost Davis.Beason needs to be back in the middle

Doubtful. The only person that would replace Beason would be Davis and thats a long shot. The Will pos in the tampa 2 is the most important. Besides Connor is a better Mike then Williams is a Will.

    • Ok, we ain't making the playoffs unless something insanely crazy happens and plus it's November, time to start planning for the draft this spring.  Pretty simple, list our positions of need, address in the draft (or left to FA) and round we should draft that need. Currently we have 8 selections, the actual slot in each round still to be determined by finishing order, but I can't see a huge swing one way or the other. (This as of Week 10) Needs: (no particular order) ILB, CB, DL, Edge, S, QB, IOL, OT Rd1: ILB/EDGE Rd2:OT Rd3:Edge/ILB (opposite of round 1) Rd4:S Rd5-a:CB Rd5-b:QB Rd6:IOL Rd7:DL
    • Isn’t XL the player Nicole Tepper told Canales to trade-up for during draft day?
    • Yeah it is along the lines of ‘fraud vitiates everything’, it just prevents an honest assessment.  You got guys with some acknowledged issues, really swimming upstream due to the quality of the QB.    I think back to game two this year when he got a lot of targets and was unable to do anything. When you look back nothing, or maybe one, was in a decent place for him to get.  I think it was week two. And ‘a lot’ maybe be overstating but there were a few.
