Fox's contract: A positive look

With Fox going into the last year of his contract- do you think that players will ralley around him to do their best to make sure he gets a new contract and stays for next year + +...

Fox has never had a team quit on him, even after starting 1-7 in 2004, starting 0-3 in 2009.. i dont think of Foxy as a "players coach" like a Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy or Bill Belichick.. but maybe the Panther players will put that on their shoulders and go out to make sure Fox is around for a few more years..

thoughts..

If JR refuses to let him get help to win it's pretty much an up hill battle for Fox. We don't even know if he's wanted here anymore so 10-6 may not mean anything. Aside from him winning the Super Bowl, the writing is on the wall.

I would think that by refusing to renewing his contract Richardson is pretty much telling everyone Foxxy is no longer wanted here! He was just being Nice about and not wanting to spend the Money on a top tier coach when we may not have football next season...at which point I will cry

This is what FoxSports had to say about John Fox so you will have to makeup your own mind about the players take.

"Head coaches like authority and power. Head coaches without a long contract sometimes struggle to lead and enforce their necessary juice. John Fox has that obstacle heading into 2010, as his deal lasts only through 2010 as the Panthers come off a disappointing 8-8 season. Fox has led the Panthers to just three winning records in eight years, though in all three Carolina won division titles."

My own guess is,the players will mostly keep their thoughts to themself, not wanting to put their head on the chopping block for a situation they have no control over.

Just another .02 and maybe off base, but I don't understand why Fox remains here as HC if he is "gone" after this year. While 2011 looks bleak at this point as far as football on the field goes, the fact remains, we need the HC in place and under contract after this season. If not in preparation for a 2011 season, then in preparation for 2012.

I think he still has a job here because of the possibility of an extension offer. He might not accept an offer or it may not be offered at all after the results of the regular season are on the wall. Either way, that doesn't spell out "gone" at this point, IMO. "Gone" is fired.....

It will be interesting to watch it unfold, but there doesn't seem to be much of a "wait and see" attitude here. The "Fox must go" crowd welcomes the end of the contract, can't wait to turn the page and doesn't think there is a snowball's chance in hell of Fox staying, while the "changing Head Coaches is always painful" crowd keeps wondering if the changing of the QB and a youth movement will help Fox get back on track and avoid the step back an HC change can bring.

Personally, whatever happens, I hope Meeks stays...I think we are on track and moving forward rapidly with a young, hungry squad led by a proven badass MLB that seems to bring the best out in his teammates and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.

Go Panthers......

The players are going to play, period, regardless of the coaching situation. Their performance will be evaluated on film by whoever comes in as a new coach, and if they want a shot at a position, they better give 100%. I'll bet the few of them who have been around for a few years won't mind or care if a new coach is brought in, because they want to win. Fox is no doubt a good guy, but his run here is over. the only thing that MIGHT change that is a SB win, not merely an appearance, but a win.

But I think Cowher is the next coach. I think he's been waiting for the vacancy to open up, and he has roots in NC. I don't know if the passing of his wife will affect any of that, but obviously, he won't have to be involved in any care for her, and getting back to such a full time vocation like coaching might be what he needs. Time will tell, I guess..

Name me one other coach who is in the last year of his contract and hasn't as least had discussions about an extension.

This article says it is Marvin Lewis but even Cincinatti has been working on one with Lewis.

Given that both Seifert and Capers were owed millions when they were fired, Richardson didn't want to make that mistake so the only obvious conclusion is that he is going to not extend him and let the new coach pick his own staff.

could be one of those Tom Coughlin situations. I doubt we win the super bowl (or get really close), but if this team surpasses everyone's expectations, and does pretty well, I think he gets an extension. Guess that wouldn't be a Coughlin situation after all then would it....ah well, you get my point. ( i hope)

It was a mistake to fire Capers and Seifert because of the money owed on a contract? Since when was that an issue, or a mistake? That was obvious, I'm sure, to the folks who write the contacts and cut the checks. Look, I'm not trying to imply that there is some kind of inside story breaking here. I just checked on it again since your article was dated March 25th and Marvin Lewis still hasn't been extended. He is probably coaching for an extension offer at this point, or wants more money than he is worth to the Bengals. As for John Fox, I still think he has a window of opportunity here, even if it's small and high up on the wall. Maybe with an unexpected result this year, he jumps through it. That's all I'm sayin'...Still would hate to see Meeks go...

maybe going into his tenth year with no playoff wins in the last 4 seasons, this team is ripe for regime change

he's a good coach but if he would have made it somewhere with us he would've done it already. 2005 could've been that year if maybe we didn't get all those shitty calls against dallas that pretty much cost us any shot at a home game and possibly a playoff bye so we could get healthy and have a better chance of not getting exhausted like we did in the conference championship game

thing is, if he can at least make the playoffs and field a team with a brand new attitude and a tweaked philosophy, re-signing him wouldn't be a bad thing. but if not, it's time to find a new coach.

now for no reason at all here's an image macro:

That has been my thinking all year. If we win and go deep, at least to the NFCCG, I say he gets resigned. Superbowl would be better of course, but at least the CG.

hence my sig

    • Then don't tune in. It's really not a hard concept to understand, if your making your decision based on your own personal needs/feelings as opposed to what is best for the future of the franchise, then it's a you problem, not a Panthers problem. When the season is already lost, every fan should be rooting for the same thing.  The team plays hard until the final whistle of the season and keeps improving as a team and individually, but in the end, we still come up short and lose games, and preferably because the other team beat us, not because we screwed up and found a way to lose due to our own fault. Look at it this way... If we are up 1 or 2 points with 3 seconds left in the game and the other team is lining up for a FG.  Beyond the joy of victory or the disappointment of defeat, what impact does the other team making or missing the FG have on our team the following season? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING Except where we draft and what teams we play due to our finish in the division. The players and coaches on the team would have the exact same level of improvement and learnings about themselves individually and as a team whether the FG is made or missed.  The ONLY difference in the end is the record in the standings and if the win or loss number changes. If you want to argue if making the playoffs to lose in the first round or just missing them is better or worse, that's totally fair and I can at least understand the other side of it.  But in what is already a lost season, if you're not hoping your team plays well but ends up losing, then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.  You're hoping for a moment of happiness at the detriment of the franchise's future, and in turn, you're basically then happy for a moment to only set yourself up for future further disappointment.
    • If we’re eliminated I want the wins more.   The season is already a disappointment and if I’m not pulling for wins why bother to tune in?
    • Two things terribly wrong with this post. First is that not one time has myself or anyone else agreeing with me said that the team themselves should think that way or try and lose for positioning.  Never once have I suggested the team should purposefully lose games, ever.  I honestly can't understand why people keep saying this in posts, not one fan has ever said the players should or would purposefully try to lose. And second, is yes, that has happened and it's happened very recently.  The 2020 Bengals were 4-11-1 and then were playing in the SB the very next season.   And while it might have been 2 years later and they didn't quite get to the SB, the 2021 Lions were 3-13-1 and then the 2023 Lions were up 24-7 at halftime of the NFC Championship game. The season between those two? They finished 9-8 and only just missed the playoffs. Which is why I keep trying to compare us to the Lions in where we are at in our re-build.  Throw out Bryce's rookie year with the Reich staff who just didn't work out and he looked god awful.   This past season when we were 5-12 in Canales' 1st season is that 2021 season for the Lions and their 1st season under Campbell.  This year is their 2022 where they grew a ton and Campbell's culture building was clear, where I'm saying we'd likely be better off in the long run if we go 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss out on the playoffs (which is still a significant improvement from last year).  Then our 2026 is their 2024 when we have a chance to be a real contender after adding a few more pieces and our key players having another year of experience under their belts.
