Question about Sam Mills

I was thinking about the current coaching situation the Panthers are in and was wonder what other people's opinions were about a thought I had.

Does anyone think that if Mills had not gotten cancer and eventually died that he would have taken over as DC in 2004 and then became the head coach at some point during Fox's stint as HC? Was he that good of a coach and/or did JR have him on a fast tract?

Just wondering what other people think...

I know he was very important to the franchise as testament to him having the only non management statute outside the stadium(and probably will be for a while). He was a good player and coach and it is very possible that he would have been promoted to DC I'm not sure if he would have become HC though.

he declined to interview as DC in 2003. The job wasn't available in 2004, so I don't know what that date was supposed to signify. So, regardless of living hypotheticals he didn't feel he was ready.

Del Rio left us for the HC job in Jacksonville in 2003, that's why they were interviewing for DC. Beginning of the Turdovac era.

    • Aggressive runner, hits the hole fast, and runs angry.  Just a few yards shy of the single game record for the team.  Absolutely phenomenal performance.  If the gameplan hadn't become weirdly pass heavy for the 3rd and first half of the 4th quarters he might have been flirting with 300.
    • I felt that way before the season started, but I'm sorry, he's already proven he isn't that guy, I don't need to learn anything more about him. He threw the ball 30 times today and could only throw for 198 yards, which was his 2nd best yardage game this year, he's just not the guy. Which means this season has already moved onto the 2nd most important thing going into this season after evaluating Bryce, and that's developing our best young players. You don't do that by only throwing 8 of your 30 passes to your best player who is still only a rookie.  Pepper him with targets and help develop him so he's ready to take a huge leap next year when we get a real HC and QB to get him the ball.
    • Every win comes from a non-sustainable source.  As CRA mentioned, Penix absolutely imploding against ATL, and then today, defense finally clicked and looked the best they’ve looked in a long time (and still have up 24 points lol) and Rico ran for 200+ yards.  We’re not going to get that every week, especially against good teams, which neither Miami or ATL are.  Both MIA and ATL are bad teams and Bryce still couldn’t get it together.  The defense (and team) had to overcome 14 points because of his turnovers again.  That was not even an average QB performance.  We are winning in spite of him.
