Williams Trade Story (The Actual Source)

Part of what makes this story hard to swallow is the compensation. Why would we take Jones who was a third rounder in 2007 who last year averaged 2 catches a game for a total of 400 yards and a conditional pick for a first rounder who is generally acknowledged as the best running back in the 2006 draft. He had almost as many yards running the ball last year as Jones has had in his career.

The only way we would be trading Williams is if we have already decided we are not going to extend him after this year and are continuing to go cheap. Problem is Stewart has shown very little this year. He is not the same guy he was last year and Goodson isn't an every down back. I sure hope this is a rumor and a bad one. This is definitely one thing I don't want to be right about.

I asked what the Panthers "needs" were and he replied "offensive line, wide receiver, defensive line, linebacker and corner back"

Right.

And have you told the Panthers FO that their all those positions are their needs?

They'd probably agree with you on the DL, other than that, they feel set with what we got.

I'm so tired of this crap.

What the Panthers FO tells the media about their needs and their actual understanding of their needs are two completely different things. Surely you realize this?

A couple of things to remember, if this is to be believed...

(and that's a pretty big "IF")

One: The Panthers are said to want to see what happens over the next two games. The Packers might not be so patient though, and there are other options (Marshawn Lynch, for example).

Two: If a trade does happen, don't assume it'll be for a receiver. That's one option, but if the team likes what they see in David Gettis, they could also go for help in one of the other need areas. Names that come to mind as possible options...

Daryn Colledge (OL)

Cullen Jenkins (DL)

Scott Wells (OL)

Brandon Underwood (DB)

I personally wouldn't trade Williams for any of these guys straight up, but they're the kinds of names I could see being included in a compensatory package.

Better question.

Have you ever seen the Panthers organization go back on what they said to the media when discussing their needs?

Reporter: So, coach, what are you feel some areas of your team you could improve?

Fox: Well, you know, right now I don't think there's any individual thing. We're really just trying to improve as a whole, and, um, yeah.

Jenkins is having a very good season and I don't see the top ranked defense in the league giving up a starting DT.

He's the only player on that list I could come close to seeing as a straight up trade. Probably would still want more though.

(but then I'm stingy)
